The youngsters all suffer from cleft palates, or harelips, and their parents can't afford the cost of corrective treatment.But...\u003c/span\u003e\n\u003cspan class='full-description hide'\u003eThai/English\u003cbr/\u003eA team of travelling doctors is transforming the lives of hundreds of Thailand's poorest children. \u003cbr/\u003eThe youngsters all suffer from cleft palates, or harelips, and their parents can't afford the cost of corrective treatment.\u003cbr/\u003eBut under the \"Smile for Fathers\" programme, the children are getting free medical care to help them look and feel more like other children their age. \u003cbr/\u003eIt's a condition that's both distressing and disabling. \u003cbr/\u003eIt can make eating difficult, cause deafness and can badly hinder the development of proper speech.\u003cbr/\u003eIn Thailand's far-flung Sisaket province, many parents live on the poverty line. \u003cbr/\u003eIt's these families that the project is targetting.\u003cbr/\u003eCalled \"Smile for Fathers\" it brings together doctors from the Navy and from a charity foundation. \u003cbr/\u003eThey're now on a nationwide tour, hoping to treat up to a thousand children, all free of charge. \u003cbr/\u003eThe Department of Education has been identifying those most in need.\u003cbr/\u003eSome of the children will have to have several operations to correct\u003cbr/\u003ethe problem.\u003cbr/\u003eIt's not a difficult operation, and doctors say it can be extremely effective in helping the children feel less self conscious among their peers. \u003cbr/\u003eSOUNDBITE: (English) \u003cbr/\u003e\"After the operation, you know, the lip is in really good shape after the operation.
