time.\u003cbr/\u003eChinese scientists consider the device an encouraging breakthrough in generating infinite, clean nuclear-fusion-based energy which could help solve the world's energy crisis. experimental thermonuclear device have found \"the artificial sun\" is a reliable energy generating process. \u003cbr/\u003eChina is the first country in the world that has brought the nuclear fusion device into operation (May 18).\u003cbr/\u003eUnlike traditional nuclear fission reactors, which split atoms to create energy and produce dangerous radioactive waste, the Experimental Advanced Superconducting Tokamak or EAST uses nuclear fusion to compress atoms at extremely high temperatures to generate energy that would produce very little pollution.\u003cbr/\u003eIf a device is developed that can withstand temperatures as high as 100 million degrees celsius and control a deuterium-tritium reaction, scientists say it will able to supply infinite, clean energy for human beings.\u003cbr/\u003eScientists believe this is an encouraging breakthrough in nuclear fusion research.\u003cbr/\u003eWu Songtao, Deputy Director of Institute of Plasma Physics under the Chinese Academy of Science says that experiments show that the experimental device is working. \u003cbr/\u003eHe says than any future fusion reactor will be similar to the EAST device. \u003cbr/\u003eThe EAST project is being carried out at the Hefei-based Institute of Plasma Physics under the Chinese Academy of Science.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Institute of Plasma Physics spent eight years and 200 million yuan (25 million U.S. dollars) on building the experimental reactor. \u003cbr/\u003eWu Songtao says that the project requires significant further investment to realise the goal of creating an new energy source. \u003cbr/\u003eScientists say it will require a total investment of nearly 300 million yuan (37 million U.S. dollars), only one fifteenth to one twentieth the cost of similar devices being developed in the other parts of the world.\u003cbr/\u003eEAST is part of the International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor (ITER), which is the largest international programme dedicated to experiments in thermonuclear fusion. \u003cbr/\u003eThe programme, still in its initial stages, involves Russia, Japan, the United States, the European Union, China and the Republic of Korea.\u003cbr/\u003eScientists say a fully functional fusion reactor would provide cheaper, safer, cleaner and endless energy and reduce the world's dependence on fossil fuels.\u003cbr/\u003eBut the most optimistic estimates suggest it will take fifty years before the \"artificial sun\" device can be commercially
