Various of mother blowing bubbles at babies trying to catch them\u003cbr/\u003eWho knows best?\u003cbr/\u003eA debate is raging in Britain over when it's safe and nutritionally advantageous to wean babies.\u003cbr/\u003eScientists have cast doubt on accepted global medical opinion that solids before six months is potentially harmful.\u003cbr/\u003eIt's dividing mothers, paediatricians and other health professionals.\u003cbr/\u003eSo far Annabel's mid morning snacks have literally been on tap.\u003cbr/\u003eHer mother is one of many who are told that 'breast is best'.\u003cbr/\u003eBut it's the question of how long the breast is good for, that's causing all the problems.\u003cbr/\u003eThe World Health Organisation (WHO) and a multitude of medical bodies around the world recommend breastfeeding over formula milk and they say this should be exclusive until the baby is six months old.\u003cbr/\u003eEven after this age it suggests breastfeeding should continue alongside nutritious complimentary foods.\u003cbr/\u003eBut the veracity of this is being questioned by paediatricians at the Institute of Child Health in London.\u003cbr/\u003eIt claimed far from being beneficial, exclusive breastfeeding could put the babies at risk of iron deficiency anaemia and food allergies.\u003cbr/\u003eIt's proving to be a thorny issue.\u003cbr/\u003eBritain's Health Protection Agency is refusing to make any policy changes until after a definitive report from the UK Scientific Advisory Committee on Nutrition (SACN) which is already reviewing all the available evidence.\u003cbr/\u003eAnnabel's mother Jacqueline Furley argues the debate is simply confusing.\u003cbr/\u003eShe has a son who's almost two.\u003cbr/\u003eProblems with his weight and diet have led her to be far more relaxed with her second baby.\u003cbr/\u003e\"With Matthew the first one I was confused. You know she'll eat, she'll eat. You know we have chilli in our food and she'll eat that, so I don't cook her anything special I give her what we have.\"\u003cbr/\u003eThe mothers here argue there needs to be flexibility.\u003cbr/\u003eMost believe there is not enough support for breastfeeding, despite having the official seal of approval from doctors and midwives.\u003cbr/\u003eAccording to the NCT about 70% of mothers breastfeed when their babies are born. \u003cbr/\u003eBy six months this plummets and only a fraction, 1% of mothers are still persevering with breast feeding.\u003cbr/\u003eJoshua Powell is seven months old and he's happy to taste almost anything in front of him.\u003cbr/\u003eHis mother Sacha Weaver is still supplementing his diet with breast milk and she says she will continue to do so for as long as he needs it.\u003cbr/\u003eThe report from the Institute of Child Health left her confused.\u003cbr/\u003e\"They said that if you wait too long the baby's iron levels are reduced and apparently from birth to six months there's supposed to be enough iron in the baby from the mother, so they shouldn't really need solids until after six months, so I think the iron stores deplete at six months.
