Wide St. Thomas' Hospital
Cutting edge medical research and clinical medicine are being brought together at a multi-million dollar centre in London.
The priority will be to discover more effective ways of tackling major health problems ranging from obesity to heart disease.
The centre at St Thomas', which is one of the United Kingdom's top teaching hospitals, was opened by the Princess Royal, Princess Anne.
This is the first of five centres in the United Kingdom which will bring together research and medical practice, and it is the first to get the royal seal of approval from Princess Anne who opened the new facility.
Laboratory breakthroughs may be exciting, but it can be years before patients feel the benefits of improvements in diagnosing illnesses, or new treatments.
Doctors here are convinced that putting research scientists side-by-side with clinical doctors and their patients will cut the amount of time it takes between finding a diagnosis and then finding a treatment.
The centre has been given a budget of 18 million dollars, and its priorities will be to tackle major health problems such as heart disease which causes over 12% of deaths around the world.
In Britain diseases of the heart and circulatory system (cardiovascular disease or CVD) are the biggest killers, accounting for almost 198,000 deaths each year.
According to the British Heart Foundation (BHF), which contributed to the funding of the new centre at St Thomas', more than one in three deaths (35%) are caused by cardiovascular diseases and about half of all deaths (48%) are from coronary heart disease. Stroke is responsible for another 28% of deaths.
Coronary heart disease by itself is the most common cause of death in the UK. It causes around 94,000 deaths in the UK each year.
Other forms of heart disease cause over 31,000 deaths, so in total there were just under 126,000 deaths from heart disease in the UK in 2006.
In Europe only Ireland and Finland have a higher rates of coronary heart disease and although levels of the illness are falling in the UK , the improvements aren't as great as in other countries around the world such as Australia, Norway and New Zealand.
The BHF's Medical Director Professor Peter Weissberg has great hopes of the new facility. He says the Foundation has spent millions on very basic research understanding how cells and molecules work.
But Weissberg says that is no good if the results can't be tried in patients. He says what the new facility allows is for the basic science discovered at campuses around the hospital to be tested on patients to see whether there are any new treatments that have come to the fore.
And they'll be given ample opportunity. St Thomas' serves at lease five million people.
Among those benefiting from the Clinical Research Facility is 61 year old Diabetes sufferer Richard Bywaters.
He says working closely with clinicians has helped him to develop an exercise regime which he was unable to undertake before. He says it's made a big difference to his life.
Next door in the Blood Flow Lab is Barbara Mitchell who struggles with sickle cell disease, which can cause her so much pain she is unable to move.
Sonographer Anne Donald explains the test she is carrying out shows how healthy the linings of the blood vessels are.
Donald says doctors now know that there are links between with what happens in sickle cell and the release of nitric oxide in sickle cell and what happens in the endothelium, which is the lining of the blood vessels, and the release of nitric oxide there. She says the team want to try and find out what that link is.
The key to diseases and why some people have a predisposition towards certain illnesses are secrets believed to be locked away in our genes.
St. Thomas' Hospital in association with Kings College University has its own Department of Twin Research which has been studying the genes, health and experiences of eleven thousand sets of twins from all over the United Kingdom.
The eyes, blood, bone, hearts, muscles and brains of each twin is thoroughly tested in a session that can last up to several hours.
Twins Laini Stoddart and Lindy Ford didn't realise until their DNA was properly tested that they were in fact identical, even though Lindy is taller and has bigger hands and feet.
They regularly undergo an eye examination. Tim Spector says by studying twins like Laini and Lindy they can try to identity the gene underlying problems such as short sightedness, or cataracts or vessel changes in the eye causing blindness. He says the tests allow him to match very detailed clinical tests dividing their genes, their DNA and finding the genes that are responsible.
Spector says twins are an amazing natural experiment because they allow doctors to separate nature and nurture.
This is because one group of twins are identical, sharing 100% of their genes and the other half are not identical and share only half their genes. Otherwise they are the same in every respect in terms of their environment, upbringing and family.
Laini and Lindy are also keen to find out the key to what makes them the same and what makes them different.
Laini says when she was pregnant she never suffered from morning sickness, because sister Lindy experienced all the symptoms instead.
The centre at Guy's and St Thomas' and King's College London is funded by the National Institute for Health Research which aims to create a total of five comprehensive Biomedical research centres, which will share a total of $164 million.
Keyword medical- health

<button
