Francisco's cable cars carry about 7.5 million passengers each year. \u003cbr/\u003eToday three lines have been preserved, each offering a unique view of some of San Francisco's most interesting and historic neighbourhoods.   \u003cbr/\u003eMany visitors opt to start at Powell and Market Streets, where they can watch the cars turn around and head back up the tracks. \u003cbr/\u003eNext they can either take the Powell-Mason or the Powell-Hyde line towards the popular tourist district Fisherman's Wharf. \u003cbr/\u003eThe California line, more popular with locals, runs 1.2 miles (2 kilometres) and passes through the prestigious Nob Hill neighbourhood and the financial district.   \u003cbr/\u003eFor Ferenz Habei, a visitor from Budapest, Hungary, the cable cars offered a welcome relief from the city's hills while allowing convenient places to get off and site-see.  \u003cbr/\u003eBell-ringing is an important part of the cable car experience and many gripmen try their hand at making music while on the rails. \u003cbr/\u003eSince 1949, there has been an annual contest for the best bell-ringer. \u003cbr/\u003eAt the cable car barn, located at Washington and Mason Streets, heavy machinery once run by steam still moves the city's cables through their underground tunnels. \u003cbr/\u003eHuge pulleys are moved gradually as the cable stretches out, and brought back in place once the cable is spliced or replaced.   \u003cbr/\u003eAfter hauling 15,000-pound cars up and down hills carrying up to 60 people for a few months, the steel cables also get worn out and need to be replaced. \u003cbr/\u003eTheir surface becomes too smooth and their diameter decreases, so that it's harder for the cars to grab on.   \u003cbr/\u003eNorbert Feyling is a maintenance supervisor for the San Francisco Municipal Railroad and is in the third generation of his family to work on cable cars. \u003cbr/\u003eHe says the grip, which holds the cable cars to the cable in order to stop and start them, is replaced every two to three days so it they can be re-lubricated and receive new ball bearings.   \u003cbr/\u003eCable cars were vital to the development of San Francisco, and Feyling says they precipitated the building of huge mansions atop some of the city's steepest hills.   \u003cbr/\u003eThe city once boasted eight lines covering much of its residential and business areas at the height of their use in the 1890s. \u003cbr/\u003eBut the electric streetcar was already in use by 1888, and began to overtake the slower cable cars. \u003cbr/\u003eAfter the 1906 earthquake, streetcar lines were cheaper and faster to replace, contributing to the trend.  \u003cbr/\u003eDr Richard Walker, Professor of Geography at the University of California at Berkeley, emphasizes that the cable car was at the beginning of a transportation trend that allowed the city's expansion.   \u003cbr/\u003eBut streetcars proved to be cheaper, faster, and easier to maintain, and in 1947 the cable cars were nearly eliminated, preserved only after a public outcry. \u003cbr/\u003eToday the cable cars are maintained for both locals and visitors to enjoy a living piece of San Francisco's
