It's market day in Bridgnorth - and farmers have come from miles  around to sell their cows, sheep and pigs.\u003cbr/\u003eThese men remember the days when it was hard to scrape a living from the land -  before Britain joined the Common Market. Now they benefit from the European Union's  food subsidy scheme, the common agricultural policy.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Conservative party has long regarded itself as the farmer's friend. And the feeling is  mutual:\u003cbr/\u003e\"Who will you be voting for?\u003cbr/\u003e\"The Tories (Conservatives).\"\u003cbr/\u003e\"Why's that?\"\u003cbr/\u003e\"Well, they always do us some good, don't they - you know, subsidies - they'll get my  vote.\"\u003cbr/\u003eSUPER CAPTION: Farmer voxpop\u003cbr/\u003eInto this sea of Conservative supporters wades a Labour candidate, pitching for votes in  this constituency of Ludlow. It should be easy, given the way the B-S-E crisis has  wrecked many farmers' livelihoods. But easy it isn't. The Labour candidate is brushed  aside by the first farmer she tries to talk to - and harangued by two others:\u003cbr/\u003eUPSOUND: \"Give the Labour party a chance. We haven't been in power for 18 years.\"\u003cbr/\u003e\"The last time you were in, bank loans went up to 26 per cent.\"\u003cbr/\u003eSOUNDBITE: \"It certainly would be a sea-change but that's what's happening nation- wide, and we're seeing that here in these rural areas. There's  no such thing any more  as a safe Conservative area.\"\u003cbr/\u003eSUPER CAPTION: Nuala O'Kane, Labour candidate\u003cbr/\u003eA few minutes later, the sitting MP, a Conservative, shows up. He's from farming stock  himself, and he's in friendly territory - despite allegations that his party caved in to the  rest of the European Union when the BSE crisis broke:\u003cbr/\u003eUPSOUND: \"What I want to know Jim is whether you're going to vote for me.\"\u003cbr/\u003e\"I expect so.\"\u003cbr/\u003eSOUNDBITE: \"I think they recognise that the Conservative party has given them a very  fair deal, particularly in the past 12 months where we've had all these problems over  BSE, and the government have supported the beef industry very substantially, and I  think that is generally appreciated.\"\u003cbr/\u003eSUPER CAPTION: Christopher Gill, Conservative candidate\u003cbr/\u003eTo see why Britain's farmers are standing by the Conservatives, look at the view from  the bridge. The medieval town of Bridgnorth owes its wealth to agriculture. It's a town  that changes slowly and reacts cautiously to anything new.\u003cbr/\u003eVoting Labour would be a jolting break with tradition, and that's not how people here  behave - although farmers insist they can't be taken for granted:\u003cbr/\u003eSOUNDBITE: \"I think it's always been thought that farmers are Conservative voters, and  I think that's probably on the whole been true. I don't think that any party now can count  on the farmers' vote. With 400 head of beef cattle on his books, he's seen cattle prices fall 25  per cent over the past year.
