Mckinnon at his desk\u003cbr/\u003eThe Secretary General of the Commonwealth Don McKinnon says Queen Elizabeth II shows no sign of lightening her commitments as leader of  the Commonwealth, despite turning 80 on Friday.\u003cbr/\u003eMcKinnon says the Queen has increased her responsibilities over the last ten years, and continues to remain in touch with issues concerning Commonwealth nations. \u003cbr/\u003e\"For her to be so healthy, so committed, continuing to be interested in what''s going on around her and certainly within the commonwealth, I think it''s very important - and for a person to make that age and still be very active, that is quite remarkable and I think a very good example,\" he says.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Commonwealth is comprised of 53 independent countries.   \u003cbr/\u003eMost of these countries have progressed from British rule to independent self-government.\u003cbr/\u003eIn addition to the United Kingdom, the Queen is also presides as Queen to 16 Commonwealth realms, including Australia, New Zealand and Canada.\u003cbr/\u003eHowever role as Head of State of Australia was challenged in 1999, when the country voted in referendum on whether to become a republic. \u003cbr/\u003eThe vote was the culmination of a debate that has lingered throughout Australian history, and despite the republic vote not proving strong enough to win, the anti-monarchist sentiment remains. \u003cbr/\u003eMcKinnon says despite this move, the Queen remains a relevant leader and it is in the interests of Australia to remain part of the Commonwealth. \u003cbr/\u003e\"Well she was riding horses yesterday and that itself tells you that a person who does that ages 80 is very confident of her own abilities. That''s fine. That''s what we like,\" McKinnon says.\u003cbr/\u003eIn her 54 years on the throne, she''s conferred more than 350,000 honours, launched 23 ships, and visited 129 countries on more than 250 official royal tours. \u003cbr/\u003eShe has about 470 official engagements each year, according to the palace.\u003cbr/\u003eMcKinnon, is a New Zealander and was elected to his current position as
