Various exteriors of National Constitution Centre\u003cbr/\u003eFor as long as the United States has gone to war, it has sent soldiers marching off to battle armed with paintbrushes, canvas, ink and sketchbooks.\u003cbr/\u003eA new show in Philadelphia is bringing to the public the sights, sounds and sensations of combat captured by the artists since the American Revolution. \u003cbr/\u003eWar is hell, as the saying goes, and as these paintings show.\u003cbr/\u003eThe grim faces of these bedraggled soldiers are part of a new exhibition of artwork by American soldier-artists. \u003cbr/\u003eExamples of their efforts over the past century have gone on display, most for the first time, in Philadelphia.\u003cbr/\u003e\"Art of the American Soldier\" has gone on show at the National Constitution Center until the end of the year. \u003cbr/\u003eIt will also travel to other as-yet-unannounced locations, the centre says.\u003cbr/\u003eThe museum has planned gallery talks, an audio tour that includes soldiers telling their own war stories, workshops and lesson plans to complement the exhibition. \u003cbr/\u003eAn online art gallery also encourages veterans from all branches of the military to submit their own art expressing their personal war experiences.\u003cbr/\u003eMore than 250 paintings and sketches from World War I to the present provide a glimpse of the daily lives of soldiers, from the canteen to the stark, noisy and chaotic battlefield.\u003cbr/\u003eUS Army First Lieutenant Heather Englehart is one of the artists whose work featured in the show.  \u003cbr/\u003eHer painting is called \"Convoy Live Fire.\"\u003cbr/\u003e\"I took a photograph of the situation. This actually gives a visual, graphic representation all the way back to World War I to current operations for what it's really like to be there.\" \u003cbr/\u003eCombat art programs are long-held military traditions, but only the Army lacks a museum to display its 15,000 wartime paintings and sketches made by 1,300 unsung soldier artists. \u003cbr/\u003eMany of the pieces in the exhibit are kept in storage and have never before been on public view.\u003cbr/\u003eThe scope of the Army's art program has waxed and waned over the decades, its funding often subject to prevailing political winds and aesthetic tastes.\u003cbr/\u003eFunding was yanked in the middle of World War II, as the program's US$125,000 price tag within a US$72 million war budget was deemed excessive by critics. \u003cbr/\u003eSome civilian artists continued working, however, with financial backing from LIFE magazine and others. \u003cbr/\u003eFederal funding was restored a year later, and 23 soldiers and 19 civilians returned to their duty.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Korean War had no Army art program. During the Vietnam War, more than three dozen soldiers were tasked with making sketches and photographs to translate onto canvas later. \u003cbr/\u003eMost recently, Army artists have been witness to military operations in Somalia, Haiti, Panama, the Balkans, and the Persian Gulf and Iraq wars.\u003cbr/\u003e\u003c/span\u003e\n\u003c/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv class='action-container flex
