Wide shot building outside with banner
Hundreds of crossword aficionados met in Brooklyn, New York recently (March 1-2) to put their skills to the test.
The American Crossword Puzzle Tournament is the country's most established competition of its kind and is now in it's 31st year.
Many of the games were played at tables in a ballroom filled with over 700 guests, who came to Brooklyn from 40 different US states and countries including the Netherlands, France, Switzerland and the Dominican Republic.
Under the direction of New York Times Puzzle editor William Shortz the American Crossword Puzzle Tournament has grown in popularity, and attracts some of the nation's brightest, who compete for a $5,000 grand prize.
Shortz says that the competition has a range of difficulties to suit everyone.
But he says that each year there is a 'killer' puzzle for the true experts.
Because a growing number of people are wanting to take part, the tournament was moved this year from Stamford Connecticut to Brooklyn.
The ballroom at the Marriot hotel is over 17,000 square feet, making it more comfortable for the puzzle solvers.
Steve Smith is the creator of the board game "Word Sweep".
He says that the best puzzles force you to think flexibly, not just about synonyms, but the 'deeper definitions of words'.
Long-time participants like 2000 winner Doug Hoylman, a retired actuary, come back each year to see how they'll fare against the competition.
He started doing crosswords as a child and enjoys the atmosphere of the tournament, where he can meet others who share the same hobby.
Holyman says he got his nickname 'the Iceman' because he never shows his nerves.
In the final round, the tournament gets more intense.
Players have to successfully adjust from the privacy of doing a crossword with breakfast to the stress and excitement of performing in front of a crowd -- finalists stand in front of hundreds of spectators to fill out the puzzles on large boards while wearing white noise headphones.
Commentators analyse their performance and make jokes while they finish the puzzles under pressure.
Maths professor Kiran Kedlaya, this year's ninth finisher, is from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) - he sees the tournament as a time to test himself in an area outside his profession.
The most common groups at the tournament, he says, are people whose work involves math, writing or music.
Kedlaya, a group of graduate students, and a few other professors in MIT's maths department, meet every afternoon to solve the day's New York Times puzzle.
He says that one time he made it to the final round of the competition and eventually came second.
Kedlaya says that was a nerve wracking experience.
This year's winner was Tyler Hinman, 23, who finished with his fourth consecutive win.
He described the puzzle as both difficult and fair, adding that key techniques are reasoning and using horizontal clues to fill in the vertical words and vice-versa.
The puzzle he solved Sunday included "cirri" for the plural of "wispy white clouds," "bitmap" for an "image composed of binary data," and the author Gertrude "Stein," identified by the title of one of her works.
Hinman says he's not a particularly voracious reader and has become good at crosswords mainly by finding all the puzzles he can online.
He says he gets nervous before a tournament, but somehow manages to stay focused on the puzzle when onstage.
And keeping cool is worth it -- his next puzzle is what to do with the grand prize of $5,000.
Keyword wacky

<button aria-expanded='false'
