I think most tourists would really enjoy it.  Well, when you come to Egypt you expect to see things like the pyramids and the sphinx and what you don't really expect to see is scaffolding around the site, so it does look much greater now.\"\u003cbr/\u003eSUPER CAPTION: Jil Chertier, French tourist\u003cbr/\u003eRestoration was essential following centuries of erosion by water, wind and sand.\u003cbr/\u003eNo machines were involved.  \u003cbr/\u003eInstead building methods used by the ancient Egyptians 4,500 years ago were employed. \u003cbr/\u003eThe one (m) million U-S dollar project was funded almost entirely by the Egyptian government.\u003cbr/\u003eHowever the operation didn't give the Sphinx back its beard - parts of which are in museums in Cairo and Britain, nor its nose, which has been missing since the 14th century.\u003cbr/\u003eBut Egyptian officials and restorers are very happy with their achievements.\u003cbr/\u003eSOUNDBITE: (English)\u003cbr/\u003e\"We restored the whole chest and you can see now for the first time that the sphinx is safe, the sphinx was sick for a long time, everybody tried to find a solution, no one could, but we did and we returned the smile back to the sphinx for the first time.\"\u003cbr/\u003eSUPER CAPTION: Dr. Zahi Hawass, director of the Giza plateau\u003cbr/\u003eDespite the new restoration, it's likely that the Sphinx will have to be restored again and again, but it's hoped that it won't be necessary for a long time.\u003cbr/\u003eSOUNDBITE: (Arabic)\u003cbr/\u003e\"There's no doubt that the sphinx has been ill for a very long time, and for thousands of years there has been restorations done and be sure that it will be restored in the future.
