Scientists...\u003c/span\u003e\n\u003cspan class='full-description hide'\u003eEnglish/Nat\u003cbr/\u003eAstronomers working with America's space agency, NASA, say they've seen a bursting star which is unlike anything ever observed.\u003cbr/\u003eIt came in the form of a huge explosion of X-rays from a distant star last August. \u003cbr/\u003eScientists studying the event were at NASA headquarters on Tuesday to report a monumental star burst. \u003cbr/\u003eThey say the radiation from the explosion struck the earth's atmosphere on August 27th, coming from a star some 20-thousand light years away.\u003cbr/\u003eScientists say the blast of rays was the most powerful wave of energy ever recorded from beyond the sun, astounding even the most seasoned observers.\u003cbr/\u003eSOUNDBITE: (English) \u003cbr/\u003e\"I live in California. Out there we're always waiting for the big one to come along. And when I saw this flash I knew the wait was over because we've been monitoring things like this for 30 years and we've never seen anything like it before.\"\u003cbr/\u003eSUPER CAPTION: Dr. Kevin Hurley, Astronomer, University of California\u003cbr/\u003eThe burst came from a star familiar to scientists. \u003cbr/\u003eThey call it a Soft Gamma Ray repeater, or S-G-R. \u003cbr/\u003eThe star, known as S-G-R 1900+14, is one of four stars discovered in the Milky Way galaxy in 1979 that have since been observed emitting powerful X-ray radiation.\u003cbr/\u003eThese so-called neutron stars are small by star standards but extremely dense, weighing one and a half times as much as our own star, the Sun. \u003cbr/\u003eThey also generate extreme heat. That intense heat can actually crack the surface of the star in what scientists call a star quake, emitting massive amounts of radiated energy. \u003cbr/\u003eThat's what scientists believe happened on this particular star and what they detected last August with a series of probes orbiting in our solar system.\u003cbr/\u003eScientists say the massive explosion of energy is huge in its potential, but something they could never repeat in earthbound labs.  \u003cbr/\u003eSOUNDBITE: (English) \u003cbr/\u003e\"There's a lot of power coming out of these objects. And potentially they could fuel our civilisation forever. That's not really practical because these objects are dangerous. We want to keep our distance from them. But nonetheless they are useful.
