In fact, sharks do not get the protection that cod gets, or plaice gets. They are often the forgotten species when it comes to conservation and management of fisheries. Because many sharks can be caught, as many as you like, they are left totally unregulated and this is one of the key aspects that is needed in the shark plan of action. adopts tough measures to safeguard shark populations off European coastlines.\u003cbr/\u003eBorg warned that sharks - though considered a fearsome sea predator - are vulnerable to overfishing and need better protection rules.\u003cbr/\u003eThe new plan is expected to include a tougher ban on shark finning - where shark fins are removed and the bodies thrown back into the ocean - and measures to improve data collection and research into shark species and their numbers in European waters. \u003cbr/\u003eThe EU says some 100-thousand tons of sharks are fished every year in EU waters.\u003cbr/\u003eThursday's announcement was welcomed by global advocacy group for ocean conservation, Oceana.\u003cbr/\u003ePolicy director Julie Cator said the EU was a \"major player\" in shark trade and praised the development of a tougher protection plan. \u003cbr/\u003eAccording to Oceana, EU countries were responsible for 56 percent of shark meat imports and 32 percent of exports worldwide in 2005.\u003cbr/\u003eIncreasingly, shark steaks are served in place of the similar tasting, but more expensive, swordfish, Oceana reports. \u003cbr/\u003eShark products also find their way into lotions and football boots in Europe. \u003cbr/\u003eThe shark fin trade is lucrative, with fins destined for bowls of shark fin soup in China sold for up to one thousand Euros ( one thousand and 286 US dollars)\u003cbr/\u003eCator said consumers needed to know that sharks were a species that \"need conserving\". \u003cbr/\u003eShe described sharks as \"the forgotten species\" and pointed out that sharks did not currently enjoy the same protection as other species of fish, such as plaice or cod. \u003cbr/\u003eThe plan announced on Thursday is expected to cover skates, rays and chimaeras
