the discard practice that depletes the oceans without any commercial advantage to fishermen.\u003cbr/\u003eThe European Union nations will seek to complete a revamp of the way fishermen hunt the Atlantic for dwindling stocks during talks in Brussels on Thursday, hoping it will give the industry better catches and threatened fish a sustainable future.\u003cbr/\u003eIf a deal is struck, it will force fishing nations like France, Britain and Spain to accept restrictions that may hurt in the short term, but replenish the Atlantic for future generations.\u003cbr/\u003eKey in the negotiations will be measures to contain the wasteful practice of \"discards,\" throwing perfectly fine fish overboard because they do not meet certain catch quotas or commercial and environmental standards.\u003cbr/\u003eIt would allow fishermen to market more fish while catching fewer.  \u003cbr/\u003eDuring detailed talks in Brussels, ministers will seek to agree just how this will work in practice.\u003cbr/\u003eFor example, they will debate what nets fishermen should use in certain waters to catch prawns while allowing bigger species, such as young cod, to escape.\u003cbr/\u003eThey'll also have to decide what fishing grounds need to be temporarily closed to protect young stocks.\u003cbr/\u003eLevels of cod in the North Sea have fallen by three quarters in the past 30 years, while prices have rocketed.\u003cbr/\u003eIt used to be a cheap staple food item, salted and dried in Portugal as bacalhau, cooked for Sunday lunch in Norway, or eaten out of newspapers - with chips - in Britain.\u003cbr/\u003eNow, wild cod has become something of a rarity.\u003cbr/\u003eBut following negotiations between the EU and Norway - resulting in a 30 per cent rise
