Currently we don't have much of the equipment that we need within, to be able to work and work effectively. Wide of balloon in sky\u003cbr/\u003eIt seems the sky is the limit for students at a university in Ghana.\u003cbr/\u003eThey are involved in a nascent space programme, which they hope will eventually lead to the launch of satellites. \u003cbr/\u003eOrganisers think the technology could help tackle things like health problems and natural disasters.\u003cbr/\u003eThese students from All Nations University College in Ghana have high ambitions.\u003cbr/\u003eThey are launching a tiny model of a satellite, the size of a drinks can.\u003cbr/\u003eIt is known as a \"Deployable CanSat.\"\u003cbr/\u003eThe students are testing the device out, but sending it up into the air on a yellow weather balloon.\u003cbr/\u003eIt is not going anywhere near space, the model reaches a height of about 165 metres, just shy of their 200-metre goal.\u003cbr/\u003eAs it floats back to the ground on a parachute, the device records temperature and air pressure readings.\u003cbr/\u003eThe descent lasts less than 30 seconds.\u003cbr/\u003eThis is the first time Ghana has put a \"Deployable CanSat\" into the air.\u003cbr/\u003e\"As Ghanians we have not really dealt into reaping the full benefit of satellite technology,\" says Manfred Quarshie, Director of the Space Intelligent Systems Laboratory (ISSL) at the university.  \u003cbr/\u003e\"So we actually as a lab, as a university, thought to go into it will help the society in other aspect to be able to really reap the benefit of satellite technology.\" \u003cbr/\u003eThe trial has been a long time coming.\u003cbr/\u003eSix students spent three months preparing the model satellite.\u003cbr/\u003eThe \"Deployable CanSat\" was kitted out with sensors, cameras and Global Positioning System (GPS) technology.\u003cbr/\u003eThe testing phase has not been without its fair share of challenges. \u003cbr/\u003eThe students initially hoped to launch the \"CanSat\" with a rocket, but discovered authorities would not give them permission to import one.\u003cbr/\u003eThey eventually settled on launching it with the balloon.\u003cbr/\u003e\"You know it wasn't easy at all, sometimes you call people here and there, sometimes you face those challenges but at the end we were able to get the data during the launching of the miniaturised satellite that is the CanSat,\" says Benjamin Bonsu, project manager at the ISSL. \u003cbr/\u003eThere is real excitement in Ghana about the future use of satellites. \u003cbr/\u003e\"Without data society can not move,\" says Emanuel Oti Boateng, Chancellor of All Nations University. \u003cbr/\u003e\"You know we have floods and so forth.
