Wide exterior of Ministry sign.         \u003cbr/\u003eA prominent critic of China's human rights record said on Wednesday that the case of a Hong Kong businessman charged with smuggling bibles onto the mainland would cause \"enormous damage\" if China pursued it.\u003cbr/\u003eUS congressman Tom Lantos appealed to Chinese leaders in Beijing to drop charges against Li Guang-Qiang who has been indicted for allegedly smuggling bibles to an underground Christian group in China.\u003cbr/\u003eThe California Democrat was speaking after a two-day visit to Beijing for talks with officials in the Chinese capital. \u003cbr/\u003eLantos has been one of China's most persistent and vociferous critics in Congress. He has argued that Beijing ought to be denied the right to hold the Olympics and receive normal trading terms with the United States until it improves its human rights record.\u003cbr/\u003eOn Tuesday, China warned the United States not to interfere in its legal affairs after President George W. Bush expressed concern over the fate of Li.\u003cbr/\u003eA Foreign Ministry spokesman said the 38-year-old had been arrested last May for smuggling tens of thousands of \"cult publications\", adding he had been distributing illegal materials with the help of members of a banned group. \u003cbr/\u003eReligious groups in Hong Kong say Li was detained in May for importing bibles for a banned Christian group.\u003cbr/\u003eChristian publishers in Hong Kong said Li had imported a version of the Bible created by a group known as the \"Shouters Sect\", which isn't a version that has been approved by Chinese authorities.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Shouters employ a charismatic style of worship that includes shouting out prayers. It was banned by China in 1995 as an \"aberrant religious organisation\", according to the human rights group Amnesty International. \u003cbr/\u003eThe anti-cult law used to charge Li was adopted in 1999 as part of a crackdown on the Falun Gong spiritual group. \u003cbr/\u003eMeanwhile an American-based bible publisher, the Living Stream Ministry says it is doing all it can to help secure the release of the Hong Kong businessman but denies Li was working for them.  \u003cbr/\u003eThe Living Stream Ministry also rejected any association with the \"Shouters Sect\", but said it remained
