Various of scientists in laboratory\u003cbr/\u003eThe Vatican will finance new research into the potential use of adult stem cells in the treatment of intestinal and possibly other\u003cbr/\u003ediseases, officials announced on Friday.\u003cbr/\u003eThe project is at a very preliminary phase and it will be years before any clinical treatment might be available, the officials said.\u003cbr/\u003eCardinal Renato Martino said the Vatican fully supports the project because it does not involve embryonic stem cells.\u003cbr/\u003eHe said he expected the Vatican to help finance the project through its Rome hospital, Bambin Gesu, but the exact amount must still be worked out in future meetings with the University of Maryland''s School of Medicine, the project''s leaders.\u003cbr/\u003eAn initial announcement by the university said the Vatican had already agreed to donate two (m) million euros (2.7 million US dollars) to the research.\u003cbr/\u003eThe church is opposed to embryonic stem cell research because it involves the destruction of embryos, but it supports the use of adult stem cells.\u003cbr/\u003eIn 2007, Pope Benedict XVI said adult stem cell research respects human life, which according to church teachings begins at conception.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Vatican has drawn criticism for its opposition to embryonic stem cell research. But the Vatican insists there are scientifically viable alternatives and the efforts of the scientific community should go in that direction. \u003cbr/\u003eFinancing this project is part of those efforts.\u003cbr/\u003eBut while embryonic stem cells are especially prized for their pluripotency - meaning they can morph into any type of cell in the body - adult stem cells are not as pluripotent. \u003cbr/\u003eFor that reason, embryonic stem cells are considered to have more potential for the treatment of diseases such as Alzheimer''s, diabetes and Parkinson''s.\u003cbr/\u003e\"This research protects life,\" Cardinal Renato Martino said Friday during a meeting with Italian and American scientists and health officials to outline the project. \u003cbr/\u003e\"I want to stress that it doesn''t involve embryonic stem cells where one helps oneself and then throws the embryo away and kills a human life.\"\u003cbr/\u003eMartino, a powerful cardinal and retired head of the Pontifical Council for Justice and Peace, said after the meeting that he had \"no doubt\" that the Vatican would help finance the project through its Rome hospital, Bambin Gesu, and other funding.\u003cbr/\u003eThe exact amount and modalities will be worked out in future meetings with the University of Maryland and other scientists involved in the project.\u003cbr/\u003eResearches involved in the Vatican-backed project are convinced that intestinal stem cells - a relatively new field - hold promise and want to assess their potential for therapeutic use.\u003cbr/\u003eIntestinal stem cells are very active cells - the intestine replenishes all its cells every few days - and they are intrinsically flexible - already programmed to generate all the various kinds of cells such as mucus cells or epithelial cells present in the highly complex organ.\u003cbr/\u003eFurthermore, harvesting them can be done through a routine procedure like endoscopy, Vatican-backed researchers said.
