This has led to a big increase in people becoming more and more obese. We can say that China, at least the urban population, is seeing an increase at the speed of 6-8% in the rate of obesity in the population.\"\u003cbr/\u003e30. Overweight patients walking up and down the steps\u003cbr/\u003eRapid gains in the standard of living, and changing eating habits over the last decade, have created a growing problem with obesity among Chinese - especially the younger generation-  but ancient traditions like acupuncture are finding a role to play in solving this modern problem.\u003cbr/\u003e20 years ago, it was rare to see overweight Chinese. \u003cbr/\u003eA much more common occurnece at that time would have been malnutrition and hunger borne of economic duress.\u003cbr/\u003eNow it is a growing problem - especially among the youngest generations - a number o whom  are born into comfort and sometimes spoiled as only children under China's one child policy.\u003cbr/\u003eFor this relatively new social issue, some Chinese doctors have turned to old traditions to find solutions. \u003cbr/\u003eAiMin Clinic in Tianjin has been using a combination of diet, exercise and traditional Chinese acupuncture - and seems to be having great success. \u003cbr/\u003eMost of the patients AP Television spoke to said they were managing to lose nearly a pound a day.\u003cbr/\u003eDoctor Yu, Acupuncture Doctor at the Clinic said, \"What we ask for is that patients here lose about 10% of the weight they came here with in the first month. Then in the following month they should lose 9% of the remaining weight. But this kind of weight - for teenagers - it is possible� young children and older people are not as fast. I guess you could say: girls lose 10 - 25 pounds. Boys lose 15 - 30 pounds.\"\u003cbr/\u003eAcupuncture has been practiced in China for thousands of years. But exactly how it works is still under debate in the West. Few doubt that it can work though, and here in China there is broad acceptance of it to treat many systemic imbalances. \u003cbr/\u003eAccording to ancient Chinese medical theory, there are 14 invisible meridians which regulate physical and mental processes as well as some 300 acupuncture points.\u003cbr/\u003eAnd when the points are stimulated by hair-thin stainless steel needles, an associated internal organ is affected. \u003cbr/\u003eThe idea of so many needles stuck into them and left there for a while is not naturally appealing to some, but Kang Zexin, 12 year old patient at Aimin Clinic, says it isn't that bad.\u003cbr/\u003e \"Well, when the needle gets stuck in� it doesn't hurt all that much. After it sticks in it kinda stings and tingles. It looks it, but it isn't all that scary. Right away, the doctor is really good - right away it is over.\"\u003cbr/\u003eAcupuncture may provide the most visible aspect of treatment, but the clinic also uses a holistic approach that involves monitoring, exercise and diet.\u003cbr/\u003eDaily weigh-ins and measurement sessions are said to add incentive and show progress or the lack of it.\u003cbr/\u003ePatients exercise everyday - swimming, badminton, basketball and spinning. \u003cbr/\u003eOn a hot summer day, the boys told AP Television they like swimming the best - they float, and forget their weight.\u003cbr/\u003eBut with obesity still being the exception to the rule they sometimes receive unpleasant attention.\u003cbr/\u003eChildhood obesity is a relatively new problem in China and the country is just starting to tackle it seriously.\u003cbr/\u003eThe current trend among the upwardly mobile appears to be indulgence\u003cbr/\u003eof the new tastes and treats that rapid economic development has brought. \u003cbr/\u003eAnd futher to that, to indulge the young generation to make up for the scarcity that older people endured. \u003cbr/\u003eThe influx of junk food, mostly from the West, has established itself as a modern and trendy alternative to home-cooking.\u003cbr/\u003eTianjin Obesity Clinic, however,  relies on a strict diet for results.\u003cbr/\u003eThe live-in patients receive three meals a day.\u003cbr/\u003eBut the calorie content is controlled as are the portions. Patients have a healthy breakfast and lunch but a very light dinner.\u003cbr/\u003eWhile eating, patients are also reminded to eat slowly and not gulp down their food.\u003cbr/\u003eThe success of the clinic is drawing attention from abroad - with patients coming to China for treatment from many countries including the U.S., and South Korea. \u003cbr/\u003eSome stay for as long as a year and a half. Others stay for two to six months. \u003cbr/\u003eLike much in modern China, a stay at the clinic does not come cheap.\u003cbr/\u003eThe clinic has dormitory beds at various prices for a single room ($4,000 USD per month), double room ($2,000 USD per month) or four person room ($1,000 USD per month) - room and board.\u003cbr/\u003eWalter Anderson left Sioux City, Iowa in the first week of June weighing nearly 400 pounds. He says he was too big to fit into the bathroom on the plane and had to hold on until he arrived in China. \u003cbr/\u003eHe has lost 40 pounds since he arrived in Tianjing.\u003cbr/\u003e\"They don't want to do it through pills. I'm being forced to do something I really didn't want to do, but I knew it was best for me, \" he said.\u003cbr/\u003eWalter and David Anderson are brothers that won free treatment at Aimin clinic thru a contest called \"Winners in Life Contest\" hosted by a company in the U.S. called Life Connection. \u003cbr/\u003eThe company is one of a growing number that help patients find cheaper or sometimes more effective alternatives to medical treatment in the U.S..\u003cbr/\u003eFounded by Dr. Shi Lidong in 1992, the AiMin clinic can hold a maximum of about 200 patients. \u003cbr/\u003eIt is full now in the summer months when students are out of school. \u003cbr/\u003eAiMin currently has 23 such clinics around China and plans to open more.\u003cbr/\u003eMr. Shi Lidong, Director of the clinic mad this overall assessment of China's current dietary and health habits:\u003cbr/\u003e\"So you can say we are eating more and better, but exercising less and less. We can say that China, at least the urban population, is seeing an increase at the speed of 6-8% in the rate of obesity in the population.\"\u003cbr/\u003eMr. Shi started his career as a traditional medicine doctor in the military and it is clear life at the clinic is heavily regimented.\u003cbr/\u003eEven if modern Chinese life has too many conveniences - like elevators - patients get a taste of
