Various of market for street fashion\u003cbr/\u003eIndia's urban young are fuelling the country's fashion revolution, made possible by the rising middle-class incomes and unprecedented consumerism in recent years.\u003cbr/\u003eThey keep themselves abreast of the latest international fashion trends, but make their own style statement with an Indo-Western look - a fusion of Western styles and uniquely Indian designs.\u003cbr/\u003eDesigner fashion displayed in a smart shopping mall in New Delhi. \u003cbr/\u003eIndia's tryst with fashion began in the early 1990s when it loosened restrictions on foreign companies, and opened its economy to branded luxury goods.\u003cbr/\u003eIn a country long known for its poverty, there is a growing class of Indians with immense wealth and a desire to spend.\u003cbr/\u003eThe rich provide the market for high-end brands like Louis Vuitton, Dior, Chanel, Armani and Bulgari who have set up shops in big Indian cities.\u003cbr/\u003eBut it is the young who throng these glittering shopping malls, their new hang-out zones.\u003cbr/\u003eWith high fashion becoming more accessible, designer boutiques and exclusive stores have become part of the urban lifestyle.\u003cbr/\u003eHowever, a large percentage of the Indian college-going crowd swears by the flea markets selling cheap but trendy clothes.\u003cbr/\u003e19 year old Shang Shang is a first year college student from the North-Eastern state of Manipur , studying at Delhi university.\u003cbr/\u003eShe shares a flat - and her passion for fashion - with two other fellow students.\u003cbr/\u003eThe girls spend their leisure time immersed in the latest fashion mags like Vogue and Elle, discussing what's in and what's out from the global fashion catalogues.\u003cbr/\u003eBut like most of her peers, Shang Shang does not wish to spend too much money on her daily wear.\u003cbr/\u003e\"For college I mostly wear cheap stuff and when I go out, I wear branded stuff,\" she says. \u003cbr/\u003eShe generally wears cheap but stylish Western clothes for college - low-rise jeans, T-shirts, spaghetti tops and dresses.\u003cbr/\u003eThese are teamed up with accessories like bags, shoes and chunky jewellery for a casual chic style.\u003cbr/\u003eThe more expensive branded items in her wardrobe come in use when she goes out with her friends.\u003cbr/\u003eShang Shang represents the new generation of young Indians whose fashion aspirations are nuanced with the older generation's belief in getting 'value for money'.\u003cbr/\u003eHer favourite shopping destination is the Sarojini Nagar market in Delhi, a popular flea market for affordable, but trendy merchandise.  \u003cbr/\u003eMost of the garments on sale here are export-quality rejects, otherwise headed for retail stores in the West.  \u003cbr/\u003eBargaining is the key to shopping in Sarojini Nagar as you make your way through the maze of tiny shops flooded with ready-to-wear clothes.\u003cbr/\u003eImitations or look-alikes of all the global styles en vogue can be found here, and at very cheap rates.\u003cbr/\u003eThe prices range from one dollar for a t-shirt to four dollars for a dress - a boon for the young college students with limited pocket money.\u003cbr/\u003eStudents say they can acquire a full wardrobe from many such funky fashion streets across the city.\u003cbr/\u003e\"It's the variety, it's the colours, it's the crazy styles that are available here. What you might just find in these exclusive stores, say in one store, here you go to ten shops, you are surely going to pick up some things...I mean more than what you have expected, you know ,\" says Priyanka Chopra, a young Fashion Designer.\u003cbr/\u003eFor exclusive shopping of branded clothes and accessories, the young frequent the swanky shopping malls.\u003cbr/\u003eEasy access to the latest in Hollywood fashion, celebrity style also influences their choice of clothes.  \u003cbr/\u003eBrand consciousness is all-time high among the college-goers - as is the desire to be associated with high-end designer goods.  \u003cbr/\u003e\"In other decades, they used to pose in front of Taj Mahal and all and get their photos clicked. We stand here, in front of Cartier and we get our photo clicked,\" says Isha Bhamri, a textile design student.\u003cbr/\u003eFashion experts feel the young Indians have worked out a judicious formula for combining adorability with exclusivity, evolving their own fashion identity in the process.  \u003cbr/\u003eWhile most of the youngsters visiting designer stores are window-shoppers, they take back with them the sophisticated imagery of the fashion chic and adapt it to their own style.\u003cbr/\u003eIn the tussle between top brands and street fashion, the youth are able to carry out the balancing act well, says Anaita Shroff Adajania, fashion director of Vogue India.\u003cbr/\u003e\"I think the youth is extremely smart and I think what they do is, they...they save up for few good things, but you know, things that they have to wear on a day to day basis, they may not spend as much on. So you know, if it's a very cool trendy thing they might buy it from a high street store or from like...like you said Sarojini Nagar, but they might save to buy that one pair of nice shoes or a great bag which they can wear for much longer,\" she says. \u003cbr/\u003eThe growing fashion consciousness is not the only transformation seen with the arrival of the mega brands.\u003cbr/\u003eWhat young urban Indians wear has also undergone a radical change.\u003cbr/\u003eModern short dresses and stilettos have replaced traditional saris and sandals.\u003cbr/\u003eYoungsters are also purchasing over-sized sun-glasses, trendy watches and casual slippers in bright colours.\u003cbr/\u003eBut within this change, there is assimilation of various influences.\u003cbr/\u003eJeans and trousers worn with loose knee high Indian shirts is one of the very many examples of the Indo-western mixes that has found favour with the young as well as the old.\u003cbr/\u003e\"They are mixing a lot of Indo-western stuff, which in our times we couldn't. So, that's a very good change,\" says local teacher, Preeti Lamba. \u003cbr/\u003eBut while some appreciate the innovative Indo-Western fusion in clothes, others find it too Western for their liking.\u003cbr/\u003e\"I think it's too western. I think we have lost all our Indian culture, all our feeling for Indian clothes and we have absolutely fabulous fabrics, fabulous textiles, designs,\" says shopper Bubbles Goyal. \u003cbr/\u003eThe sari is still visible at big social or religious functions, but has almost become obsolete as a garment of daily wear among the young girls.\u003cbr/\u003eSimilarly, the kurta-pajamas, the long knee
