There was no warfare in the period, that's what characterises the period - two and a half centuries of peace. And we feature here the fanciful helmets that were parade helmets because war didn't take place. Certain accoutrements of the Samurai could be more fanciful and more playful. An artist featured is Miyamoto Musashi, who is famous for a book called the \"Book of Five Rings\", and he's also one of the best painters of the period.\" \u003cbr/\u003eSUPER CAPTION: Robert Singer, Guest curator of the Edo exhibition\u003cbr/\u003eMiyamoto Musashi was a masterless Samurai, also known as a ronin,  who reputedly killed 60 swordsmen by the time he was 29.\u003cbr/\u003eLater in life he turned to Buddhism and the arts, producing wooden sculpture, metalwork, paintings and calligraphy.\u003cbr/\u003eThe hanging scroll \"Shrike\" is the best-known of his ink paintings and shows a shrike perched on a slender branch poised to attack its prey. \u003cbr/\u003eThe exhibition also features a collection of theatrical costumes.\u003cbr/\u003eAt the time, the new Kabuki theatres treated contemporary events with humour and irreverence, and to avoid censorship often set events in the past.\u003cbr/\u003eIn contrast to the elegance of traditional 'no' robes, Kabuki costumes feature bold designs.\u003cbr/\u003eThe delicate nature of many of the works of art means the National Gallery in Washington will have to rotate the exhibits.\u003cbr/\u003eA modified exhibition will go on display in January.\u003cbr/\u003eCurator Robert Singer said it was difficult to get some of the work he wanted for the exhibition out of Japan.\u003cbr/\u003eSOUNDBITE: (English)\u003cbr/\u003e\"There is a piece in the second half of the exhibition that's on the cover of the catalogue.
