However, when the museum finally opened its doors to the public on November 19th, 1819 the museum was home to national collection of paintings and sculptures.
To coincide with the 194th anniversary of the foundation of the museum, the Prado has allowed Spanish artist Miguel Angel Blanco to develop 22 interventions or installations alongside the museum's most important and renowned works of art.
In an exclusive tour of the exhibition, Blanco explains the concept of his installations, the interplay of his ideas with the works of art and how the installation has in a sense created a new dialogue between the artistic and the scientific.
Blanco's exhibition "Natural Histories" begins at the very entrance to the museum through the Goya door. A Golden eagle screeches in to face of King Carlos V, a sculpture constructed by Leone and Pompeo Leoni. The eagle, like all the natural history elements, comes from the vaults of the Spanish Natural History Museum (MNCN) and Centre for Scientific Investigation (CSIC).
The use of animal symbolism is omnipresent in nearly all of the installations. The eagle has been associated with imperial power since Charlemagne, and in Blanco's work "El Furor de las Aguilas/The Fury of Eagles" the eagle appears to challenge the rule of crown. The name of the piece is taken from the name of the original sculpture - "Carlos V y el furor/Charles V Dominating Fury".
"El Aquelarre/Witches' Sabbath" is an unsettling work by Spain's Francisco Goya. Painted during his 'black' period, the scene depicts the devil in the form a male goat summoned up by a group of witches. Blanco uses the painting's references the complete the installation. His use of upside down male goat horns coupled with frogs, salamanders and snakes preserved in formaldehyde complement Goya's 1821-3 original with tangible elements of witchcraft and the occult. Moreover, the addition of a lump of sulphur - the smell associated with the devil - makes the effect total.
"Las Meninas" by Diego de Velazquez, perhaps the Prado's most famous work, is transformed in this exhibition by a new perspective given by the addition of an albino sparrow. Blanco positions the bird - symbolic, he says, of the artist himself - to the right of the picture where daylight is coming in through the window, giving the impression of the sparrow being part of the landscape outside the painting.
In another of his audacious interventions: the use of lighting transforms the cold marble of a roman statue invoking the Dolphin Venus (a Roman workshop version of the Mazarin Venus) into a now submerged, undersea world. The statue is transformed by the shadow of a dolphin's skeleton swimming over the top of female deity. The new addition subverts the original. In the Roman version, the dolphin symbolises Venus' birth from the sea but now, the looming skeleton is threatening.
In the main hall of the Prado in an exceptional work of taxidermy, the Veragua bull is placed next to the Rape of Europa by Paul Rubens.
The bull in Ruben's work, a metamorphosis of Zeus has now presented itself whole, challenging all the other works in the hall.
"I am trying with my interventions not only to affect the one (original) work of art but also the other works. In particular these women painted by Rubens who are totally naked who react to the 'stud' by trying to cover themselves. It's a way that the works interact," he says.
The stud bull was created from a plaster cast of the dried out bull with its skin painstakingly replaced over top.
"Natural Histories" is now open to the public and runs until spring 2014.
Prado Museum, Madrid - November 18, 2013
++Client note.
