They have a kind of internal engine and when you're in an artists' community you kind of feel the buzz. You feel that it's more than the sum of its parts. It's not an apartment building with a gallery attached to it, or courtyards, or a parking lot. It's people who come together who are like-minded, who share a spirit and a soul and a commitment to being a part of the art community. I got my first job through someone here. Obie, down the way, he's been the sculptor at Brickbottom for a long time, and I learned things from him. But there are many different steps, I have, you know metal comes in, it comes in in sheets, real heavy sheets or long, 20-foot lengths. And then I stack that all up and then I have to cut it, so I have chopping tools and bandsaws and plasma cutters, and then it has to be bent, so I have benders of all sorts. And I tend to do things kind of like the way they tell you not to do them. You know because all my curves are not perfect circles, I want them to be like sort of warped so I do it the wrong way. Medium shot Kinetic Fish head  \u003cbr/\u003eSince 1987, the Brickbottom artists' community has provided its members with affordable live/work space right next to Boston, helping to develop some of the region's most exciting talents. \u003cbr/\u003eAnnual open studio events bring in hundreds of visitors to browse and buy paintings, photos, sculptures and other creations at the Brickbottom Gallery.   \u003cbr/\u003eCalligrapher Pier Gustavson has lived at Brickbottom since the community formed twenty years ago. His office is full of calligraphy paraphernalia and materials he uses for the maps, wedding invitations and other designs that he works on there. Gustavson says he enjoys working at home, but also finds it a challenge.   \u003cbr/\u003eDebra Weisberg, is also one of the original artists to join the collective. She shares a large, bright apartment in the gallery complex with her husband and two children. \u003cbr/\u003eHer studio is filled with drawings made from tape on paper, hangings made of membrane-like webbed surfaces, and white mounds that seem to erupt out of the wall.  \u003cbr/\u003eHer work explores the idea of energy, explosions, and the mix of attraction and repulsion people feel towards the strange or grotesque. \u003cbr/\u003eWeisberg says she finds the artists' community inspiring and supportive. \u003cbr/\u003eThe community is well known among local curators like Barbara O'Brien of the Trustman Art Gallery at Boston's Simmons College. \u003cbr/\u003eO'Brien says that Brickbottom is a place for artists to nurture their talents in a way that feeds into the local art scene.   \u003cbr/\u003eAnother of Brickbottom's notable residents is David Tonnesen. His outdoor steel sculptures and indoor decorative pieces are designed to combine art with function. \u003cbr/\u003eHis work includes vast wind-interactive sculptures and custom lighting and sculpture for restaurants and private houses.\u003cbr/\u003eTonnesen says he credits the Brickbottom artists collective with helping him develop his work.\u003cbr/\u003eIn order to create the soaring, graceful structures from which he's made his name, Tonnesen says he spends his days cutting, bending and binding sheets of metal. \u003cbr/\u003eTonnesen's dynamic metal creations are the accent for many an outdoor space -- \"Kinetic Fish,\" for example, moves with the wind and has an eye that changes colour. \u003cbr/\u003eThe Kinetic Fish now sits on top of an office building by the Boston harbour, an area popular with sailing enthusiasts.  \u003cbr/\u003eA recent exhibition called \"Then and Now,\" looked at how the 48 founding members have developed over the last two decades. \u003cbr/\u003eThe
