a drink of beer or glass of wine and the country's laws are quite liberal. \u003cbr/\u003eThe Egyptian wine industry is experiencing something of a revival in recent years. \u003cbr/\u003eWine is not a new product for Egypt, people were drinking wine in ancient Egypt over 5,000 years ago. \u003cbr/\u003eTourists pass the great pyramids at Giza dressed in vests and shorts. \u003cbr/\u003eThe many Muslim country takes a pragmatic approach to tourism and the strict Islamic observances which practising Muslims obey here are of no concern to holidaymakers. \u003cbr/\u003eThe same goes for alcohol. \u003cbr/\u003eWesterns can enjoy a glass of wine or beer with their meal in the comfort of their own hotel. \u003cbr/\u003eBut for Egypt's Muslim majority alcohol is forbidden. \u003cbr/\u003eHowever ancient Egyptians cultivating vineyards on the banks of the Nile over five centuries ago. \u003cbr/\u003eThese faded friezes in the tombs of the pyramids show people crushing grapes and a man holding a bunch of grapes. \u003cbr/\u003eZahi Hawass, is Egypt's Secretary General of the Supreme Council of Antiquities, says that the ancient Egyptians invented wine. \u003cbr/\u003eBut enthusiasm for wine declined over the years, especially after Egypt fell to Muslim conquerors in the 7th century.\u003cbr/\u003eAfter flourishing in the 1940s and 1950s, Egypt's wine industry deteriorated when its only beverage company, Gianaclis, was nationalised in 1966.\u003cbr/\u003eIt wasn't until October 2005, when EgyBev emerged, that competition startled an industry that was monopolised for years by Al-Ahram Beverages Co., now owned by Heineken.\u003cbr/\u003eHadji-Thomas, a French citizen of Christian Lebanese origin, estimates that only 7 million of Egypt's 78 million people drink alcohol.\u003cbr/\u003eTourists comprise 70 percent of Hadji-Thomas' consumer base, with Egyptians and foreign residents accounting for the rest.\u003cbr/\u003eNow producers like EgyBev, the country's second alcoholic beverage producer, are battling bureaucratic regulations and a harsh desert climate to revive the country's wine industry.  \u003cbr/\u003eGrapes require heavy irrigation in this desert country with sparse rainfall. \u003cbr/\u003eHadji-Thomas uses only locally grown grapes from vineyards off the highway between Cairo and Alexandria.\u003cbr/\u003eAt EgyBev's facility in the resort town of El Gouna, the wine bottles can only be filled only if an official is on duty from the Ministry of Finance to see that each bottle is stamped, indicating that EgyBev has paid the 100 percent sales tax on each one. \u003cbr/\u003eBut despite the obstacles, local wine quality is improving, largely due to competition between EgyBev and the company that formally had a monopoly of the industry, Al-Ahram Beverages.  \u003cbr/\u003eAndre Hadji-Thomas, is the managing director of EgyBev. \u003cbr/\u003eHe says that healthy competition has improved the quality of locally produced wine. \u003cbr/\u003eWith sales on the rise, Hadji-Thomas has doubled his production capacity. \u003cbr/\u003eIn the next two years he expects to sell 2.5 million bottles, or roughly half of Egypt's market share.\u003cbr/\u003eEgyBev's winery is strategically placed in El Gouna, an upscale resort community far from Cairo's mosque-filled skyline. \u003cbr/\u003eAt the luxury Nile Hilton hotel in Cairo, guests can choose between local wines and imported ones. \u003cbr/\u003eLocal wines have a competitive edge. \u003cbr/\u003eHotels and restaurants with tourist licenses pay 400 percent tax on imported wine. \u003cbr/\u003eFor those without a license, the levy soars to 3,000 percent.\u003cbr/\u003eThat encourages many tourists to turn to Egyptian wines.\u003cbr/\u003eAt Cairo's luxury Nile Hilton hotel, an estimated 80 to 90 percent of the wine sold is local. \u003cbr/\u003eJean-Pierre Mainardi, the Hilton's manager and a wine expert says that local wine is very good. \u003cbr/\u003eEgyBev's best customers are tourists, who comprise 70 percent of the company's sales, with the other 30 percent going to foreign and Egyptian residents. \u003cbr/\u003eIn 2006, Egypt attracted about 9.1 million visitors, a 5.5 percent increase over the previous year, according to the Egyptian Tourism Authority. \u003cbr/\u003eSales of local wines jumped 6.2 percent during the same period, according
