We also need clear rules about what companies can do with consumers' data. Angela Merkel has to push now for passing an EU bill on data protection soon,\" he said.\u003cbr/\u003eBillen said Merkel should use her influence at the EU to force a bill through in 2014.\u003cbr/\u003eHis comments were echoed by Peter Schaar, Germany's Federal Commissioner for Data Protection and Freedom of Information, who said the US needed to understand that its interests would suffer if it continued with such surveillance on nations regarded as its allies.\u003cbr/\u003e\"I don't think the US government can be convinced by arguments or outrage alone, but by it becoming clear that American interests will suffer if this global surveillance just goes on,\" he said.\u003cbr/\u003eSchaar called for the suspension of Safe Harbour agreements between the EU and the US. Under the agreements US companies sign up to EU directives on the protection of personal data. \u003cbr/\u003eThe Safe Harbour principles are designed to prevent accidental information disclosure or loss. \u003cbr/\u003eSchaar also called for the suspension of the EU's SWIFT data exchange agreement with the US, and for trade talks to be \"put on ice\".\u003cbr/\u003eSWIFT (Society for Worldwide Interbank Financial Telecommunication) provides a network that enables financial institutions around the world to send and receive information about financial transactions in a secure environment.\u003cbr/\u003eThe European Parliament recently voted to suspend US access to SWIFT, following concerns that the US was tapping into SWIFT for spying purposes, instead of using it just to track international payments to combat financing of \"terrorism\".\u003cbr/\u003e1.
