They were mainly fishermen and the waters were over-fished and it was becoming harder and harder and harder for them to make a living. This therefore meant that they were being forced into the rainforest, they started to log trees and trap wildlife and all of these sorts of things. So when we were here talking to them we realized that maybe, if there was some sort of sustainable tourism model, this might be able to help with health and education and alternative livelihoods, so we started on with this project which is now Song Saa."
Today the resort employs around 230 people, 90 percent of them locals, while guests are encouraged to donate to programs aimed at developing local communities and protecting the environment.
Keov Pov is the village chief of Prek Svay village on the island of Koh Rong.
He says that as the fishing has declined locals are keen for employment from tourism.
"In the past we could fish wherever we wanted but it's not like that now that the government is developing the area - they are protecting the fishing grounds and corals, as we are doing ourselves. And also some people will need to get new jobs, for example, driving tourists around or something like like, they can earn more money from that.
