These are not necessarily life threatening things, but they are trip ruining things."
Travelling around to different venues and being in close proximity others in large crowds means it difficult to protect yourself against common illnesses, but the clinic says it's best to take your own medical kit.
According to Dawood: "Drugs are not manufactured around the world to the same stringent standards and there is a huge issue with fake drugs and medicines of poor quality. I think in general my rule of thumb is that it is best to have medicines wherever you are and wherever you're from, it is best to have medicines that come from your own country. At least you understand what the ground rules are and what you're likely to be getting."
Dawood says you should take the obvious medication for things like diarrhoea, headaches, cuts and sunscreen to guard against sunburn.
He even recommends getting your doctor to prescribe a precautionary course of antibiotics in case of infection.
Mosquito nets and repellents are considered essential.
A report published in The Lancet medical journal this week warned that the cities of Natal, Fortaleza, and Recife are designated as high risk for dengue fever a viral infection passed on by mosquitoes.
It causes symptoms such as fever, headaches and muscle pain and in the most serious cases dengue haemorrhagic fever can be fatal.
Dawood says:"Brazil is a huge country, it spans the urban coastal areas, the big cities, the vast Amazon basin, so a city like Manaus in the heart of the Amazon. So it's a huge geographic range and also it's essentially, although there are some highly developed parts of Brazil it really is a developing country. There are parts of it where you might be, as a traveller in quite close contact to people with maybe not the highest standard of general health."
Doctors recommend you have all you necessary jabs at least three weeks in advance of travel, some people will already have had some injections such as tetanus others will need boosters for different strains of hepatitis.
Other diseases spread by the the mosquito are malaria for which doctors strongly recommend medication and yellow fever for which there is a vaccine and according to Dawood if you are hoping to travel onto territories neighbouring Brazil it may be important to ensure you have certificates of vaccination.
He says: "Countries often require yellow fever certificates, proof of vaccination from any traveller arriving into a country where there is any kind of a remote possibility that they might have been bitten by an infected mosquito. Now for personal protection the presence (of disease) in Brazil is not uniform. It really is the interior of the country where there is a risk somebody going to Rio, somebody going to coastal cities would not be at particular risk and would not need to be vaccinated for their own protection, they might however, need to be vaccinated if they are travelling onwards to a country that might regard the whole of Brazil as being an infected area."
With the right protection and awareness of hazardous areas it's possible to go ahead and enjoy the exotic wildlife of the interior and the sunshine on Brazil's beautiful beaches on a post football match chill out.
Fortaleza, Brazil, April 29, 2014
1.
