Mid children playing on the side of the road in Ga-Rankuwa township   \u003cbr/\u003eA new once-a-day antiretroviral pill is set to change the way the world's largest population living with HIV deals with the virus.\u003cbr/\u003eIn a township on the outskirts of South Africa's capital, the country's health minister on Monday launched the rollout of a pink pill, set to replace current treatment regimes of several pills - with just one.\u003cbr/\u003eThe government hopes the new pill will help more HIV positive patients take their medication properly, and make it cheaper and easier to distribute the life-saving drugs.\u003cbr/\u003eIt's taken the government ten years to put 1.9 million patients on ARV treatment in South Africa - and that's just the tip of the iceberg. It hopes to put close to a million more HIV positive patients on ARVs in the next two years - and says the new pill should help with that.\u003cbr/\u003eThe country's Health Minister, Dr Aaron Motsoaledi, says they've managed to negotiate the lowest price for the fixed-dose combination drug - in the world - and they hope that competition between drug manufacturers will make the price of the new pills drop even further.\u003cbr/\u003eThe government says they'll be starting with newly diagnosed HIV positive people, HIV positive pregnant women and breast-feeding mothers - with the new regime then slowly being rolled out across the country to other patients on older ARVs.\u003cbr/\u003eMotsoaledi said: \"The importance is that we are switching over from what we've been doing in terms of treating HIV patients to a fixed-dose combination. And, you know, it's going to make my life easy, and I'm going to understand better as to not to forget my medication, than having to take them in the morning and in the evening.\"\u003cbr/\u003eFrancesca Conradie is the President of South Africa's HIV Clinicians' Society - the professional body of doctors leading the fight against the pandemic. She says - to date - there have been repeated shortages of life-saving antiretroviral drugs across the country - meaning that patients don't get the crucial medicines they need.\u003cbr/\u003eConradie said: \"As I say, it's always a different reason given to us.
