Thanks to satellite and ground based observations over the last six years, we know that gamma ray bursts are the brightest explosions in the universe, shining with the light of a billion billion suns. The nature of their progenitors, however, by which I mean the stars which give them birth, has remained shrouded in mystery. One of the reasons why is for the most part we have only been able to study these births beginning several hours after the explosion when the birth itself is already light-years in size and has long forgotten all of youthful idiosyncrasies. Animation showing a black hole\u003cbr/\u003eAstronomers who hurried to train their telescopes on a fleeting but intense burst of gamma-ray energy last autumn have discovered new evidence linking the phenomena to the birth of black holes.\u003cbr/\u003eLarge numbers of telescopes worldwide were used to observe the gamma-ray burst and detected unexpected variations in its afterglow for the first time.\u003cbr/\u003eThe observations, detailed in the latest edition of the journal 'Nature,' suggest these gamma-ray bursts are not one-time events but that the central source of their energy persists longer than previously believed.\u003cbr/\u003eGamma-ray burst have puzzled astronomers since their detection. In ten seconds, they can release as much energy as our sun will during its entire ten (b) billion-year lifetime.      \u003cbr/\u003eThey are followed by an afterglow that can persist for weeks, even years.\u003cbr/\u003eTypically, astronomers have focused on the afterglow only well after the initial burst, thought to be triggered by the collapse of a massive star into a black-hole.\u003cbr/\u003eNow, an international team of astronomers report they succeeded in making continuous observations of the afterglow of a gamma-ray burst, beginning just minutes after a NASA spacecraft detected the initial blast.\u003cbr/\u003eOn October fourth, NASA's High-Energy Transient Explorer satellite detected a gamma-ray burst. The first alert to astronomers went out eleven seconds later. \u003cbr/\u003eWithin minutes, astronomers in California and Japan began observing the burst's afterglow.  Eventually, at least 46 telescopes around the world joined in making observations.\u003cbr/\u003eThe observations revealed unexpected variations in the afterglow's brightness, which suggest they
