That's the way I look at it.\" \u003cbr/\u003eSUPER CAPTION: James Edelen, Tobacco Farmer\u003cbr/\u003eFacing an uncertain future, tobacco farmers have begun to diversify, using less labour- intensive crops like wheat, corn and soybeans.  \u003cbr/\u003eLabour costs, they say, have outpaced the profits.\u003cbr/\u003eTo maximise his profits and eliminate the need for hiring workers, Edelen began growing  tobacco plants hydroponically.   \u003cbr/\u003eThe seeds germinate in a greenhouse until May. After that they are transplanted into  the fields. In five hours, Edelen saves three days of back-breaking labour.\u003cbr/\u003eThe higher cost of labour and the changing political and social climate have forced out  many of Edelen's neighbours from Marlboro country.\u003cbr/\u003eSOUNDBITE: (English)\u003cbr/\u003e\"You have a lot of time just sitting on the tractor thinking about how many people used  to live here.
