Now in 1 and 3 we had seen explosions previously outside of the containment... outside of the outer wall of the reactor, if you like. At Unit 2 there was an explosion inside the containment, and there is a fear that it may have damaged the containment structure itself, and that is worrying because it is going to make it harder to prevent the leakage of radiation. The second important development was the fire in reactor unit 4. Now that is significant because that fire took place in basically a swimming pool-like structure where used highly radioactive nuclear fuel is stored. Washington, well wishers dropped off flowers outside the Japanese Embassy as the flag was lowered to half mast to honour the dead and missing after last week's earthquake and subsequent tsunami.\u003cbr/\u003eMonitoring the ongoing crisis at the Fukushima Dai-ichi nuclear plant, nuclear energy expert James Acton, of the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, described the last 24 hours there as the most serious and worrying since the earthquake hit.\u003cbr/\u003eActon said the twin accidents - the explosion in unit 2 and the fire in unit 4 - would make it harder for authorities to contain the radiation.\u003cbr/\u003eBut he added: \"I think it is very likely that the tsunami that hit Japan will kill considerably more people than the nuclear reactor accident 140-thousand remain in the new 30-kilometre (19-mile) warning zone and have been told to seal themselves indoors to avoid exposure to radiation. \u003cbr/\u003eRadiologist Dr Clifford Chao, from New York's Presbyterian Hospital, said \"there are very imminent dangers to those people living around\" the site and said the effects could be felt for people who live hundreds or even thousands of miles away.\u003cbr/\u003eJapan, as the only country to experience an atomic bomb attack, is particularly sensitive to radiation fears.\u003cbr/\u003eMeanwhile, the Obama administration's most vocal advocate for nuclear power said on Tuesday that the reactor crisis unfolding in Japan would help the United States strengthen safety at its 104 reactors.\u003cbr/\u003eEnergy Secretary Steven Chu told a House of Representatives panel that America was committed to learning from Japan's experience.\u003cbr/\u003eThe US Energy Department has sent 34 people and 17,150 pounds of equipment to Japan to help monitor and assess the situation at the plant.\u003cbr/\u003eChu said the initial step was to help the Japanese government cool down the damaged reactors and to stop the leaking radiation. \u003cbr/\u003eAfter the reactors were secure, he said, the next step would be to understand what happened, and then assess whether US reactors have similar vulnerabilities. \u003cbr/\u003eUnder
