Yet, the great advantages of biotechnology have yet to reach developing nations in Africa and other lands where these innovations are now most needed. Acting on unfounded, unscientific fears, many European governments have blocked the import of all new biotech crops. Because of these artificial obstacles many African nations avoid investing in biotechnology, worried that their products will be shut out of important European markets. For the sake of a continent threatened by famine I urge the European governments to end their opposition to biotechnology.\"\u003cbr/\u003e9. Pan of crowd applauding Bush\u003cbr/\u003eUS President George Bush called on European governments to abandon their boycott of bio-engineered crops on Monday saying the ban was based on \"unfounded scientific fears\". \u003cbr/\u003eSpeaking at the Bio 2003 International Convention in Washington, Bush said wealthy nations had a responsibility to help troubled nations in their fight against famine, by sharing advances in crop production.\u003cbr/\u003eThe US president said if European governments ended their opposition African farmers would be more likely to invest in biotechnology knowing that Europe's markets would be open to their products. \u003cbr/\u003eBush's criticism of the EU comes as the US is demanding that the World Trade Organisation force the Union to end its ban on genetically modified food.\u003cbr/\u003eHis speech on Monday, coincided with the US Department of Agriculture's three-day international ministerial conference in Sacramento.\u003cbr/\u003eBoth Bush's speech and the conference come at a time when debate over genetically modified foods is at fever pitch. \u003cbr/\u003eOpposition to biotechnology is galvanising around the world, and protesters at the conference in Sacramento say inside the country as well.\u003cbr/\u003eActivists argue that biotechnology is not the antidote to the complex food problems facing developing
