Medium of Echizen jellyfish caught in net.
Japan's costal waters are being invaded by teeming masses of giant Jellyfish.
They can weigh up to 200 kgs (440 lbs) and their umbrella can span as much as 2 meters (6.56 feet) in diameter.
These huge jellyfish are now causing serious damage to the local fishing industry.
Echizen jellyfish - the latest visitors to Wakasa Bay in Japan's Fukui prefecture.
The bay is home to rich fishing grounds that have traditionally supported local communities.
In recent decades the abundance of marine produce has also helped to foster a local tourist industry.
But the area's economy is being seriously threatened by the invasion of Echizen jellyfish.
Professor Uye Shin-ichi of Hiroshima University has been studying the phenomenon.
"This phenomenon began in 2002 and has recurred almost every year since," he says.
For reasons that are still unclear the jellyfish were not present in large numbers in 2008.
Professor Uye believes that the jellyfish originate in Chinese coastal waters and he attributes their sudden proliferation to a combination of factors.
"The area is characterised by over fishing and nutrients washed into the ocean from the land, rivers and cities that have created eutrophication On top of that the sea temperature is raising in conjunction with global warming. A number of factors like this have combined and I think that they are connected to the proliferation of Echizen jellyfish," he says.
Eutrophication is an increase of chemical nutrients in an ecosystem that leads to a rise in the organic compounds that form the base of the food chain.
The son of a tofu factory owner, Uye artificially bred Nomura's jellyfish in his lab at Hiroshima University which helped him determine their life cycle, growth rates and feeding habits.
He travelled by ferry between China to Japan this year to confirm they were riding currents to Japanese waters - consuming upward of a swimming pool's worth of plankton-rich water each day.
He also concluded the waters off China offered a perfect breeding ground for jellyfish - eutrophication from agriculture and sewage runoff, plus declining fish catches.
The waters of the Yellow Sea have warmed by as much as 3 degrees F (1.7 degree C) over the past quarter century.
The effects of the jellyfish on the fishing industry in the Echizen district of Fukui prefecture have been catastrophic.
The industry most threatened is that of the set net fishermen, who anchor large nets to their boats or the shoreline.
The sheer weight and number of jellyfish is causing many nets to tear.
"The jellyfish mean that labour costs rise as the time the work takes increases. The jellyfish also decrease the value of the fish that we catch. They are nothing but trouble," says Koya Muneo, Leader of the Kokonogi Set Net Fishing Cooperative.
"Because the jellyfish have such large bodies, particularly when they enter set nets, their bodies prevent water flowing through the nets, as more jellyfish are caught in the net, resistance builds up under their weight and the nets rip. This is the biggest cause of damage," explains Uye.
Set nets cost around $400,000 when new and are expected to last around 20 years.
Repairs are a costly and replacement is often a financial impossibility.
Separating the jellyfish from the target catch is also time consuming and expensive.
Furthermore, fish caught in the nets are often stung by the jellyfish.
The venom both effects the appearance of the fish and flavour of the meat.
Consequently the catch has a far lower market value than fish caught in normal conditions.
To make matters worse, fishermen are also occasionally stung by the jellyfish.
The venom is not fatal, but stings are painful and cause swelling.
Despite these problems, the fisherman of the Kokonogi cooperative are still fortunate in comparison with others in the area.
Due to damage caused by Echizen jellyfish, set net fishing has been suspended until next March at the neighbouring ports of Kuriya and Komeno.
Oma Fumio is a member of Komeno's 18 man crew.
Unable to go to sea when Typhoon no. 18 hit Japan in early October nets filled up with jellyfish over a 3 day period.
"Around 10,000 piled into the net per day. It filled up and in the strong current the net was torn," he says.
The result was that the nets were ruined. Fumio and the rest of his crew face unemployment until the spring.
"What now? All I can do is claim unemployment benefit," says Fumio.
Jellyfish are edible and some companies are trying to capitalise on their abundance by turning them into a snack food.
A company in Kyoto is selling giant jellyfish ice cream and another is planning to roll out a Japanese pickled plum dip with chunks of giant jellyfish as well packs of dried jellyfish strips.
The dried jellyfish looks like a stale omelet and feels like a rubber glove, but is packed with protein and is calorie free, according to the company.
Scientists have also developed a method of extracting collagen from the jellyfish that is being used in cosmetics and pharmaceuticals.
But to the fisherman of Wakasa Bay, as cooperative leader Koya Muneo puts it, the jellyfish "are nothing but trouble."

<button
