Rack focus from natural forest to a palm plantation\u003cbr/\u003e21.Various palm plantation\u003cbr/\u003eThe race to find environmentally friendly fuel may be threatening the future virgin rainforests in Indonesia.\u003cbr/\u003eAs trees are cut down and peat land dried out to make way for palm oil plantations in Indonesia's Riau province, local villagers complain of environmental damage and environmentalists say the deforestation causes the country's carbon emissions to rise.  \u003cbr/\u003eIndonesia's Riau province is the home to vast rainforests. \u003cbr/\u003eBut now miles of jungle are giving way to acres of palm oil plantations. \u003cbr/\u003eIndonesia has the third largest forests in the world after Brazil and Congo, but the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) says it believed the country is losing more than 1 million hectares of forests every year. \u003cbr/\u003eMuch of these lost forests have been converted into palm oil plantations. \u003cbr/\u003eBiofuels, which are made from corn, palm oil, sugar cane and other agricultural products, have been seen by many as a cleaner and cheaper way to meet the world's soaring energy needs than with greenhouse-gas emitting fossil fuels. \u003cbr/\u003eIndonesia is expanding its biofuel production for export to meet strong demands, particularly in Europe. \u003cbr/\u003eBiofuel from palm oil in Indonesia is projected to reach 700 million litres by 2009 and 4,700 million litres by 2025.\u003cbr/\u003eFitrian Ardiansyah, Climate and Energy Director for the WWF in Indonesia, says that rainforests such as those in Riau are being cleared to make way for palm oil plantations. \u003cbr/\u003eArdiansyah says the argument that palm oil is carbon friendly can be misleading.\u003cbr/\u003eWhile the Indonesian government insists that palm oil is only being planted on land that was previously deforested or neglected, environmentalists claim that big companies prefer to chop down virgin forests because they can sell the logs to invest in palm oil plants. \u003cbr/\u003eMuch of the forests in Indonesia sit on carbon-rich peat land. \u003cbr/\u003eTo plant the palm oil trees, the peat land must be drained first by creating canals and also often by burning, and this resulted in the release of a high percentage of carbon dioxide (CO2) from below the peat into the atmosphere. \u003cbr/\u003eArdiansyah says this means that palm oil is not environmentally friendly despite being called a 'bio-fuel'. \u003cbr/\u003eThe contradiction of palm oil is nowhere more evident than in this small fishing village in the heart of Riau's woodland.\u003cbr/\u003eKuala Cenaku was a quiet village of several hundreds villagers, located within sight of a peatland forest which villagers still believe as their ancestral land.\u003cbr/\u003eBut in 2005 peace was replaced by the sound of mechanical diggers as a nearby palm oil company started clearing the forest to plant palm oil trees. \u003cbr/\u003eThe company also created canals to dry out the peat, and they were accused of burning the forest last year. \u003cbr/\u003eKuala Cenaku's village chief Mursyid Ali, who lived here all his life, watched in horror as his forest disappeared.\u003cbr/\u003eHe says the palm oil plantation did not destroy only the environment in his village, but it also killed their livelihood, and tonnes of fertilisers for the palm oil plants polluted the water. \u003cbr/\u003eDespite continued protests, Ali says he sometimes feels that he is losing the struggle for his homeland. \u003cbr/\u003eHe says the company did not have the permits to operate in his village, but he says it has paid bribes to local officials to ensure it could continue planting palm trees there. \u003cbr/\u003eAli has vowed to keep pressuring the company to stop working in his village, but he was at a loss of words when describing his feeling every time he looked at what was once a forest in his ancestral land. \u003cbr/\u003eSome environmentalists are calling for a Western boycott of palm oil from countries like Indonesia in order to save the rainforests. \u003cbr/\u003eBut the WWF argues that this approach is unfair to the general population and small farmers who depend on palm oil for their livelihoods. \u003cbr/\u003ePalm oil plantations have long been a staple of the economies of tropical Indonesia. \u003cbr/\u003eLocal farmers have traditionally used the oil made from the red apple-sized fruit to make a vast range of products, from soap to chocolate and to lipstick. \u003cbr/\u003eNow they also have the chance to sell the oil for biofuel. \u003cbr/\u003eArdiansyah says that instead of a total boycott, the international world should appeal to Western consumers to buy only certified sustainable palm oil, which does not grow on newly converted forests.\u003cbr/\u003eA recent report  by the U.N. Environment Program, UNEP, says loggers are clearing an estimated 5.2 million acres of Indonesian forest a year for timber worth $4 billion.  \u003cbr/\u003eIn addition to palm oil plantations, Indonesian forests are also being decimated by fires and commercial logging for timber. \u003cbr/\u003eThe Indonesian government said in early October that it plans to plant 79 million trees in a single day ahead of a major United Nations climate change conference in December on the resort island of Bali. \u003cbr/\u003eEnvironment ministers from 80 countries will meet there to begin talks on what actions the world must take after the first commitment period of the Kyoto protocol expires in 2012. \u003cbr/\u003eKeyword
