Radio Dijla poster\u003cbr/\u003eIraq's first independent, uncensored, talk radio station is giving residents of Baghdad the chance to phone in and air their grievances.\u003cbr/\u003eRadio Dijla says its two phone lines are bombarded by thousands of callers every day, a testament to its popularity.\u003cbr/\u003eDays ahead of the handover, Iraqis are plagued by blackouts, security woes, overflowing sewers, a lack of clean drinking water, unemployment and doubts about whether the incoming interim government will succeed in bringing the dream of democracy to fruition.\u003cbr/\u003eAnd, after 35 years of Saddam Hussein's dictatorial rule, where the wrong opinion overheard could be rewarded by a beating or execution at Abu Ghraib prison, Iraqis are relishing the chance to speak their mind.\u003cbr/\u003eThis is talk-radio, Baghdad style, where the survey question of the day mirrors the shifting priorities of Iraqis - from worries that militants will try to derail Wednesday's handover of sovereignty to the issue of oil exports.\u003cbr/\u003eRadio Dijla, named after the Arabic name for the Tigris river, has been broadcasting its varied programming for about two months from a villa in western Baghdad.\u003cbr/\u003eAhmed al-Rikabi, the station's founder, said: \"Iraqis have needed to talk for years. They've had a lot to say.\" \u003cbr/\u003eThe station can be heard playing in taxis, cafes and even the offices of producers in other Baghdad radio stations, says al-Rikabi.\u003cbr/\u003eAl-Rikabi said: \"We're a bridge - a conduit - between the people and the government.\" \u003cbr/\u003e\"We capture the pulse of the street because the programs are driven by those who call in. Their voice is the voice of the street.\"\u003cbr/\u003eAl-Rikabi was born in Prague to Iraqi parents living in exile and has a long background in broadcast journalism in Europe.\u003cbr/\u003eHe started the station with a 300,000 US dollar grant from an unnamed Swedish foundation. \u003cbr/\u003eThe station's mission is clear in the motto squeezed in between calls and songs: \"Our opinion doesn't matter, it's your opinion that important.\"\u003cbr/\u003eBefore he set up the station, he helped launched the Iraqi Media Network, a brainchild of the Pentagon that was aimed at presenting a more pro-American slant on the news. \u003cbr/\u003eDisillusioned by what he said were editorial restrictions in the network _ which runs the al-Iraqiya television station and two Baghdad radio stations _ he left and set up Radio Dijla.\u003cbr/\u003eIn a country where, US and Iraqi officials say, insurgents and terrorists are trying to sow the seeds of sectarian unrest, Radio Dijla's nine announcers, and staff of about 40, work hard to ensure that their programming alienates no one. \u003cbr/\u003eThe only restrictions on callers is a ban on incitement of violence, hate speech or defamation of character.\u003cbr/\u003eFor those not interested in Saleem's late night social issues show, try the morning Fatwa, or religious edict, show in which two Muslim clerics _ a Shia and a Sunni _ get together to answer callers' religious questions.\u003cbr/\u003eBut instead of debating each other, the clerics simply present answers to specific questions within the context of their interpretation of Islam.\u003cbr/\u003eFor other listeners, the station has literally been a lifeline.\u003cbr/\u003eOne night, when a woman with eight children called in to say that she had no money to feed her children because her husband had died, station employees dispatched a driver with food for her family. \u003cbr/\u003eThe woman called back later that night to say that a man had also
