Robbie Cooper walking around gallery looking at his photos\u003cbr/\u003eThe virtual world of online gaming and chat rooms is a daily reality for close to sixty (m) million people around the globe.\u003cbr/\u003eState-of-the-art technology is allowing them to create increasingly sophisticated avatars - their three-dimensional online selves. \u003cbr/\u003eBritish photo-journalist Robbie Cooper spent a year tracking down the people behind the avatars, investigating the extent to which their lives are echoed in their digital alter egos.   \u003cbr/\u003eThe results recently went on show at an exhibition, Alter Ego, in London.\u003cbr/\u003eIt's a cyber world out there.\u003cbr/\u003eFrom Paris... to Beijing.... to Tikrit in northern Iraq...\u003cbr/\u003eevery day millions of people are playing games and interacting via the internet.\u003cbr/\u003eMany games and chatrooms require the player to have a visual, three-dimensional online character.\u003cbr/\u003eIt's called an avatar - a virtual self, an electronic alter ego.\u003cbr/\u003eYou get to choose how you look and how you behave.\u003cbr/\u003eAnd there are endless possibilities.\u003cbr/\u003eBritish photo-journalist Robbie Cooper decided to track down the people behind the avatars.\u003cbr/\u003eTravelling across the US and Europe, Robbie and his camera have captured how they portray themselves online.\u003cbr/\u003eInvestigating the relationship between the virtual world and the player's real lives.\u003cbr/\u003eSOUNDBITE (English)\u003cbr/\u003e\"The ones that surprised me were the ones whose online existence was a kind of a reflection of their real personality or their real existence and you know people who their avatar was very much like themselves whose interests online were just an extension of their real, everyday interests. But with a shared online world there is definitely an added dimension to it because you are communicating with people at the same time as becoming involved in some kind of you know, escapist narrative
