And it's the greatest explosion since then. But the energy  density of Big Bang was essentially infinite. So it wins.\"\u003cbr/\u003eSUPER CAPTION: Dr. Stan Woosley, Astronomer, University of California.\u003cbr/\u003eScientists theorise that such a gamma ray burst may be caused by a rotating black  hole that saps up huge amounts of surrounding energy, releasing it in a cosmic event.\u003cbr/\u003eWoosley went on to describe the extraordinary scope of the energy release, which  occurred in a matter of seconds over an area of about a hundred miles across.\u003cbr/\u003eSOUNDBITE: (English)\u003cbr/\u003e\"The energy is staggering in any terms you care to express it. It was as bright as at  least a (b) billion Milky Way Galaxies, or five (b) billion of the brightest super novae  we've ever seen. A (m) million quasars. If this event occurred on the far side of the  galaxy, 60 thousand light years away, it would have been brighter than the sun. And  that would have been in gamma rays. It is as bright as if you took all the bright objects  in the entire visible universe, put them together, and put them at that distance, it would  be about that intensity.\"\u003cbr/\u003eSUPER CAPTION: Dr. Stan Woosley, Astronomer, University of California.\u003cbr/\u003eScientists also say they were able to detect a distant, faint galaxy as the gamma ray  burst afterglow faded.\u003cbr/\u003eStudying that afterglow has led scientists to believe such gamma ray bursts do not  occur in our own Milky Way Galaxy, but in distant galaxies.\u003cbr/\u003eScientists on the team say the brightness of this gamma ray burst, and its extreme  distance, are a testament to the awesome power of what they're now calling a hyper  nova.\u003cbr/\u003eSOUNDBITE: (English)\u003cbr/\u003e\"We have shown that gamma ray bursts are truly energetic, and the word hyper nova is  probably appropriate. In fact, for a few seconds gamma ray bursts can potentially  outshine the whole universe.
