Various of pyramids\u003cbr/\u003eEnglish/Nat \u003cbr/\u003eThe Pyramid of Cheops in Egypt used to play host to thousands of tourists each day. \u003cbr/\u003eBut the constant pedestrian traffic resulted in the deterioration of ancient walls. \u003cbr/\u003eNow, as the pyramid is about to reopen to the public, the focus is shifting away from tourist dollars to the preservation of culture.  \u003cbr/\u003eThe Pyramid of Cheops in Giza is one of Egypt's most famous monuments. \u003cbr/\u003eTourists have flocked here for centuries to view its majestic lines. \u003cbr/\u003eBut although the tourists have brought desperately needed hard currency, they've also brought chaos.\u003cbr/\u003eThe constant visits led to a deterioration to the ancient walls. Egypt had no choice but to close down the pyramid for a year. \u003cbr/\u003eSOUNDBITE: (English) \u003cbr/\u003e\"The great Pyramid of Cheops will be opened a few days from now. It was closed for a year. We did the ventilation system, we cleaned graffiti from the Grand Gallery and we restored some of the cracks that occurred from humidity inside the pyramid, and we did one of the most impressive lighting (jobs) inside the pyramid. Of course, we really would like to preserve the pyramid so we made a decision this week that only 300 people will be permitted to enter per day and that's really the way we can accommodate the need for tourist and the preservation of the monuments.\"\u003cbr/\u003eSUPER CAPTION: Dr. Zahi Hawass, Director of the Giza plateau \u003cbr/\u003eEgypt's culture minister will preside over the ceremonies. \u003cbr/\u003eThere's no doubt that some tourists will be disappointed that they will not be able to enter the restored pyramid, but most seem to understand it is for a good cause. \u003cbr/\u003eSOUNDBITE: (English) \u003cbr/\u003e\"I think it's great they're opening it up again and its a great idea to keep it just to a few people a day because it will keep it going for a long time and my grandchildren can come and see it. That's what it's all about. Its been closed for a year, and during that time we put in an air conditioning system, we cleaned up the graffiti inside the pyramid and open some of the rooms that were previously closed. This is in order to reconcile our Egyptian need for hard currency as well as preserving and restoring our heritage. We'll be limiting the number of visitors to 300 people per day.
