laws.\u003cbr/\u003eAttorney General John Ashcroft says he wants new laws that will have an impact on anti-terrorism efforts.\u003cbr/\u003eOne of the major changes he is requesting is the ability to wire-tap an individual instead of a telephone number.\u003cbr/\u003eCurrently, a wire-tap can only be issued for a particular telephone number.\u003cbr/\u003eAshcroft says such a new law would allow the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and others to continue surveillance even though a suspect changes phones, or even changes mobile phones and discards old numbers.\u003cbr/\u003eAlso at Mondays briefing was FBI Director Robert Mueller.\u003cbr/\u003eHe told reporters that the United States government will not tolerate any attacks or threats against Arab-Americans.\u003cbr/\u003eMueller added that the Justice Department will prosecute anyone who commits hate crimes.\u003cbr/\u003eSince Tuesdays terrorist attack in New York and the Pentagon there have been dozens of suspected hate crimes directed against Arab-Americans.\u003cbr/\u003eThe crimes include arson, assaults and two possible ethnically motivated murders.\u003cbr/\u003eMueller added that 49 individuals are being detained across the country because of suspicions that they may be involved in Tuesday's attacks.\u003cbr/\u003eMeanwhile, White House spokesman Ari Fleischer was asked whether the law against assassination by American security agencies is in effect.\u003cbr/\u003eFleischer responded that while the law is in effect it doesn't stop the United States if it acts in self
