I want my teacher to give me that.\"\u003cbr/\u003eSUPERCAPTION: Vox Pop, Student\u003cbr/\u003eBut for many Taiwanese the issue of education is not the principal concern at present.\u003cbr/\u003eThe festivities, although colourful and spectacular, have not escaped the mighty storms that have been raging across the island.\u003cbr/\u003eMany of the celebrations on Monday had to be cancelled because of the rains.\u003cbr/\u003eStorms caused by typhoon Yanni have been pounding the island with strong winds and torrential rain, causing mudslides in Eastern and Central Taiwan.\u003cbr/\u003eFishing boats have capsized and gone down - one at Toucheng port in northeastern Taiwan.\u003cbr/\u003eThe typhoon has brought 14 inches of rain to Taiwan with up to 24 inches have been recorded in some parts of the island.\u003cbr/\u003eMany streets in Taipei have been flooded, and many homes are empty, their occupants having fled the rising waters. \u003cbr/\u003eThere have been serious mud slides in the mountains but no casualties have been reported.\u003cbr/\u003eMeanwhile, more rain is forecast - the weather bureau in Taipei has warned that more rains and flash floods will hit Taiwan on Tuesday.\u003cbr/\u003e Taipei, Taiwan - 28 September 1998\u003cbr/\u003e1.
