Various of damaged boardwalk in the New York borough of Queens\u003cbr/\u003eVictims of superstorm Sandy went to church on Sunday in the New York borough of Queens, as cold weather began settling in across the region and another powerful storm was forecast for the middle of the week.\u003cbr/\u003eSix days after Sandy howled through, overnight temperatures were beginning to sink into the 30s Fahrenheit (around minus one degrees celsius), and hundreds of thousands of homes and businesses were still without electricity. \u003cbr/\u003eNew York City officials have handed out blankets and urged victims to sleep in shelters and spend their days in heated emergency centres.\u003cbr/\u003eDespite the hardships, some local residents living in the Rockaways, in the New York borough of Queens, have been buoyed by their post-storm experiences. \u003cbr/\u003e\"I've never seen people pull together like this before, it's been probably the most incredibly wonderful experience of my life, watching everybody come together and get close,\" said local resident Kiva Kahl.  \u003cbr/\u003eOn Sunday morning a mass held in the tight-knit community of Breezy Point, also in Queens, became a celebration of resilience in the face of crushing losses.\u003cbr/\u003eAt St. Thomas More Catholic Church, hundreds of parishioners crammed into the church and held candles during a service without electricity.\u003cbr/\u003eBishop of Brooklyn, Nicholas DiMarzio, was applauded when he spoke about braving the storm. \u003cbr/\u003eHe said there was no timetable for rebuilding, but called on parishioners to not abandon hope.\u003cbr/\u003eBreezy Point suffered heavy flooding and a massive fire that destroyed more than 100 homes.\u003cbr/\u003eCongressman Bob Turner, whose house was destroyed, said the rebuilding process had already begun. \u003cbr/\u003e\"There are 131 homes here that have been levelled by the fire, as well as an untold number that are totally destroyed by the flood, and everyone has some significant damage. So we have a big rebuilding programme here and we are going to get to it,\" he said. \u003cbr/\u003eThe US National Weather Service predicted on Sunday that strong winds, including gusts of up to 55 miles per hour (88.5 kilometres per hour) were likely to reach the New York and New Jersey area by Wednesday and could compound the havoc brought by last week's violent
