Mid shot pan solar panels on roof of cottage
The British government has pledged to create more environmentally friendly homes and to make all new homes zero carbon by 2016.
But how can homeowners go about making existing homes more energy efficient ?
The people of Oxfordshire were invited to look inside some of the 'greenest' homes in the county for inspiration and eco advice.
A country cottage in a rural setting.
From the outside, this home which is half of a former eighteenth century-stone brewery, looks like a typical renovated cottage in the English countryside.
Older houses have a reputation as cold and drafty buildings - but this one is cosy inside.
The new extension at the back of the cottage is constructed of local unseasoned oak.
Whilst renovating the building the owner, Sally Harper, insulated the house with natural breathable materials and other energy sufficient devices.
A 1920s lamp combined with a 21st century energy saving bulb is one way that Sally combines the traditional with the new.
Sally explains that her main eco focus was on insulating the walls, roof and solid floors which has managed to halve overall energy consumption in the home.
The under floor heating for instance, uses an old Roman system that combined pumice and a marine aggregate clay laid on the floor in thicknesses of about 300 mm.
A highly efficient wood burning stove provides the heat for the under floor system which can retain the heat for 20 hours.
The original stone and lime mortar walls were insulated with sheep wool batts that are placed between wooden batons and faced with a German particle board composed of compressed sawmill waste which does not use formaldehyde glues.
Sally gives advice to two visitors who are thinking of introducing some of these eco renovations in their own homes.
Kathy Barrett, one of the visitors, is visiting homes taking part in the Open-Eco day to get tips for a flat that she has just bought.
Her friend, Hilary Moor, is also seeking inspiration from the eco-homes on display.
Sally also receives a visit from a former tutor, Mary Hancock, programme leader of Energy Efficient and Sustainable Building MSC course at Oxford Brookes University, who has arrived with a thermal imaging camera.
Mary is measuring the various levels of heat loss around the room.
She notes that the heat loss around the window is greater than in other parts of the room.
During the cold winter months, the wood burning stove comes into its own.
But during the summer months, the stove is turned off and then it's up to 4 square metres of solar thermal panels to generate hot water.
Before planning authorities could allow the panels in this conservation area, the panels had to be mounted behind a flush roof light.
In nearby Oxford, another eco home looks like an ordinary two storey terraced house so common in many English towns.
But this mid-Victorian property located in Osney Island in central Oxford boasts several green features including under floor heating.
Architect David Hammond explains to visitors some of the main eco-renovations he made to the house he bought in 2000.
In the garden, his wife Barbara, talks to another group about some of the heat savings of their system which includes a PV (Photo Voltaic) solar panel installed on the roof of an outdoor office which supplies all of the home's energy demands.
Barbara says that during the sunny summer months the heat collection system allows her to enjoy many hours of energy-free laundry as the washing machine can take the hot water directly from the system without having to heat the water itself.
By far the most striking eco-renovation of this apparently ordinary house is the use of water from the nearby River Thames to run the 6Kw heat pump hidden in the back garden.
A pump lowered into the river pulls the water at a rate of 35 litres per minute through a filter and into a 1.5 inch (3.8 cm) diameter pipe which carrys the water under the road and the ground floor of the house, through the heat pump, and back into the river.
Installing the system was relatively inexpensive: 290 (600 US dollars) for a license from the Council and 1452 (3000 US dollars) to dig up the road.
Asked by one of the visitors whether using water from the river could be used by other houses along the road, Barbara sees no reasons why the pump system couldn't be replicated for wider use.
Back inside, other would-be eco renovators discuss how to introduce under floor heating in their own homes.
However one visitor Krishna Ramamurthy, admits that the costs of installing solar heating may be too high at present.
Eighteen 'green' houses opened their doors to visitors in the Oxfordshire as part of Britain's largest eco-homes 'Open Doors Weekend' to date.
The pilot project, which took place November 24-25, 2007, is designed to show visitors how to create a greener home.
Organizers the Climate Outreach Information Network and Oxford University-led ClimateXChange, hope the project will expand and run across the UK in 2008.

<button aria-expanded='false' aria-label='Read more description'
