people. \u003cbr/\u003eBut while mobile phones and motorcycles may be common in some of China's remotest villages, properly trained doctors are scarce. \u003cbr/\u003eMany young Chinese choose to migrate to the cities in search of work, and medical students are no exception. \u003cbr/\u003eIn order to tackle the problem, and improve the standards of rural health care, the government is investing in training for village doctors - many whom lack any standard medical education. \u003cbr/\u003eWang Wenyi is a key figure in Niulandian Village in China's southwestern Sichuan Province. \u003cbr/\u003eVillagers come to this 78 year-old doctor to cure their headaches, stomach aches, and other ailments. \u003cbr/\u003eWang was aged just twelve when he started studying traditional Chinese medicine under the village doctor. \u003cbr/\u003eHe was in his fifties when he began practicing western medicine the best he could, with no training. \u003cbr/\u003eHe's one of China's nearly one million rural physicians, also once known as the barefoot doctors for their barefoot work in the rice paddies along with their rudimentary medical practice.\u003cbr/\u003eBut two years ago Wang was given his first chance to study western medicine and despite his age, he  jumped at the opportunity.\u003cbr/\u003eThe medical classes have allowed him to learn the nuts and bolts of medicine and to put to practice theories of medicine. \u003cbr/\u003eBefore if a patient came with a stomach ache he just prescribed a painkiller. \u003cbr/\u003eNow he knows to diagnose whether it's indigestion, a stomach ulcer, or some other intestinal infection, and that training has helped him save at least one patient who could have otherwise died of a bleeding stomach.\u003cbr/\u003eWang's training has come courtesy of a company called Haoyisheng, which means 'good doctor'. \u003cbr/\u003eFounded in 2000 by Gao Zhan, the company over the years has opened more than 11,000 classrooms for rural physicians across 28 provinces in China. \u003cbr/\u003eIn many cases the doctors have to pay for the training themselves, but at the end of the three-year programme they receive a degree, the equivalent of a high school degree. \u003cbr/\u003eThis qualification will allow them to stay in business as the government raises the bar for the license of such rural physicians.\u003cbr/\u003eWang pays a little over 2000 yuan ($290) a year for books and classes. \u003cbr/\u003eDuring the semester, he has three classes of theory and two practical classes every week.\u003cbr/\u003eIn the evening or on days when there are no classes, he attends to the medical needs of the villagers, which helps him make over 1000 yuan ($145) a month, much of that income comes from selling medicine. \u003cbr/\u003eHis physician fee alone is a mere 1 yuan (15 cents) even if he has to walk several miles to see the patient. \u003cbr/\u003eWalking is part of Wang's daily life. \u003cbr/\u003eThe dirt paths that lead to the county where classes are held are muddy when it rains, making it impossible for cars or motorcycles to get through. \u003cbr/\u003eOn those days, Wang walks two hours each way to class. \u003cbr/\u003eClasses are held in the government health bureau of the nearest county called Lezhi. \u003cbr/\u003eThe teacher is a computer screen, sessions created by Haoyisheng and distributed throughout the country on computer hard drives.\u003cbr/\u003eThe presence of a real teacher in every class room is unrealistic, so the video lesson has been devised in order to educate all the village doctors quickly. \u003cbr/\u003eNot only has China been hit by new infectious diseases such as SARS and bird flu in recent years, but the economic development, even in rural China, means that rich nation diseases unseen before in the countryside, such as diabetes and heart diseases are on the rise. \u003cbr/\u003eGerman educated biochemist Gao, 48, says that to bridge the gap created in the past three to four decades in rural health care, a 'Great Leap Forward' of training village physicians would be needed to meet the demand.\u003cbr/\u003eBut progress is on the way, one doctor at a time. \u003cbr/\u003eZhou Chaoming, started taking Haoyisheng classes towards a degree two years ago.\u003cbr/\u003eHe also recently took a special course on diabetes and purchased a kit to help his patients. \u003cbr/\u003eZhou started as an acupuncturist as health problems prevented him from labouring in the field or going to work in the factories. \u003cbr/\u003eHe's pleased with the new knowledge he's gained will allow him to help his patients better. \u003cbr/\u003eFor example, before the classes he didn't know that a patient with swollen feet and legs who is also short of breath could have heart problems. \u003cbr/\u003eNow he can better identify heart problems and can prescribe medicine to strengthen the heart and position the patient to sit up straight with legs down to help.\u003cbr/\u003eThat's good news for his patients. \u003cbr/\u003eThis one was recently diagnosed with diabetes, a disease that can lead to many disabilities and even death if gone untreated.
