\u003cbr/\u003eNintendo's newest console, Wii (pronounced \"wee\") went on sale in the US on November 19th. \u003cbr/\u003eAfter several delays Sony's PlayStation 3 (PS3) arrived in shops on November 11 in Japan and November 17 in the United States.  \u003cbr/\u003eMicrosoft's Xbox 360 was launched in November 2005.\u003cbr/\u003eBut for less than hard core gamers there are other, less expensive, options, according to one manufacturer.\u003cbr/\u003eVideo games used to be considered something that adolescent boys did in their basements, locked away for hours.\u003cbr/\u003eNow some simple video games are built into most computers, some mobile phones and available online.\u003cbr/\u003eWith their bright colours and simple themes, these types of games are what the video game industry calls \"casual games\".\u003cbr/\u003eJohn Vechay, Online Director of PopCap Games, says that a \"casual\" game is something that is easy to pick up and enjoy without much video game experience.\u003cbr/\u003eThe company estimates that nearly one hundred fifty million people play games like this - on all kind of devices ranging from laptops and ipods to cell phones. \u003cbr/\u003eAnd it's now a billion dollar industry.\u003cbr/\u003eAccording to the 2006 Casual Games White Paper by industry experts of the IGDA (International Game Developers Association), the casual games industry has grown from almost nothing in 2002 to well over $600 million in 2004 in the United States. \u003cbr/\u003eThe IGDA predict that by 2008, industry experts anticipate that the market will surpass $2 billion in the US alone. \u003cbr/\u003eCasual games are simple by design and less intense than the hard-core games that are generally targeted at young men.\u003cbr/\u003eThat's one of the reasons, says David Roberts, CEO of PopCap Games, that the demographics of the games target market is rapidly changing - it's getting older and more female.\u003cbr/\u003eAccording to a recent survey that the company conducted in the United States, about half of the 150 million or so people that play games like this are over fifty years old, and one in five of them are over sixty.\u003cbr/\u003eMost of the \"casual\" games are non-violent, puzzle or word games like \"Bookworm Adventures\". \u003cbr/\u003eIn this game, players link letters together and build words to feed a hungry \"book worm\".  \u003cbr/\u003eVechay says that Bookworm has been the most expensive production of any \"casual\" video game that they've ever created.\u003cbr/\u003eWhether it's a simple sorting game or a hungry worm that eats words, it seems that these games are attracting a whole new type of gamer. \u003cbr/\u003eEarlier this month, Nintendo's newest console, Wii (pronounced \"wee\") went on sale in the US on November 19th. \u003cbr/\u003eAfter several delays Sony's PlayStation 3 (PS3) arrived in shops on November 11 in Japan and November 17 in the United States.  \u003cbr/\u003eMicrosoft's Xbox 360 was launched in November 2005.\u003cbr/\u003eEnthusiasm for the PlayStation 3 was not dampened by its high price tag, $500 US Dollars for the basic model with a 20-gigabyte hard drive and $600 US Dollars for the 60-gigabyte version, which also has built-in wireless.\u003cbr/\u003eBy contrast, Nintendo Co.'s Wii, retails for
