A photocall offered a sneak peak at some of the diamond jewellary unveiled as part of the annual charity benefit for amfAR (American Foundation for AIDS Research).
The 'A Diamond is Forever' collection features 12 one of a kind necklaces created especially for the event, and valued at $25 million (US Dollars). Some of the world's leading diamantraires have come together to create the designs, from master craftsmen who polish the stones to the jewellary houses that sell them.
DAME ELIZABETH TAYLOR will chair tonight's event, along with Elizabeth Hurley and Julia Ormond, while Dame Shirley Bassey will perform the appropriate classic 'Diamonds are Forever'.
Cannes has welcomed back a past Palm d'Or winner DAVID LYNCH with his latest dark and moody tale 'MULHOLLAND DRIVE', screening in competition last night.
The director won the festival's top prize in 1990 with 'Wild at Heart' and is known for his surreal atmospheric style, with past credits including 'Dune' 'The Elephant Man' and the cult TV hit 'Twin Peaks'.
'Mulholland Drive' was originally also intended for the small screen, and reunites much of Lynch's regular team - composer Angelo Badalamenti, production designer Jack Fisk, and editor Mary Sweeney.
Lynch creates a dreamlike, twisted Los Angeles for the movie - no smog, no traffic jams, but plenty of ominous touches creating a feeling of dread and impending doom.
The plot follows a dark haired woman known only as Rita (Laura Elena Harring) who is involved in a car accident on Mulholland Drive, California, that leaves her suffering from amnesia. She wanders the streets of Los Angeles in a daze before taking refuge in an apartment.
She is found there by Betty (Naomi Watts), a wholesome Midwestern blonde who has come to the city to try and make it as an actress. Together, the two set out to solve the mystery of Rita's true identity.
Lynch explains why he is drawn to abstract filmmaking, saying " Some people, see an abstract painting and they walk away, other people see an abstract painting and it starts a dialogue starts happening between the person and the painting, and many many things are conjured up in the mind by abstraction"
LA PIANISTE (The Piano Teacher) by Austrian director MICHAEL HANEKE is also in competition.
The French co-production is Haneke's 6th feature, and stars Isabelle Huppert and BenoĂŽt Magimel.
The film follows Erika Kohut, a piano teacher in her late thirties living in Vienna with her tyrannical elderly mother in a closed off world of love-hate dependency where is no room for men. Their status quo is spectuacularly challenged with one of Erika's pupils decides to seduce her.
La Pianiste is based on a novel by Elfriede Jelinek, one of Austria's most important contemporary authors.
The writer has explained her lead character Erika by saying: Her unlived sexuality is expressed in voyeurism: she is a woman who cannot partake in life or in desire. Even the right to watch is a masculine right.
The woman is always the one who is watched, never the one who watches. In that respect, to express it psychoanalytically, the viewer is dealing here with a phallic woman who appropriates the male right to watch, and therefore pays for it with her life.
Huppert's performance has been widely praised, with many tipping her for the festival's best actress award.
ALAN CUMMING and JENNIFER JASON LEIGH have joined forces to create 'THE ANNIVERSARY PARTY' and been rewarded with recognition on Cannes' list for Un Certain Regard.
It's the first feature either star has both written and directed - they also co-produced the film.
Both also star in the film, alongside KEVIN KLINE, GWYNETH PALTROW, and PARKER POSEY.
Alan and Jennifer play Joe and Sally Therrian who throw a party to celebrate several coinciding milestones in their marriage: their 6th anniversary, their decision to start a family and their reconciliation after a year-long separation.
They invite their closest friends, their past and current temptations, and (to avoid a lawsuit) their contentious neighbours. But an unexpected gift sends the party spinning out of control and unleashes an explosion of painful confessions. Instead of being an affirmation of life and love, the celebration turns into a scorching dissection of a marriage on the brink.
Alan Cumming has already worked with some of his cast on previous projects. He played an evil record manager in Josie and the Pussycats, and a slimey family friend in Emma alongside Gwynneth Paltrow. A group of filmmakers, entertainment executives, internet developers and business professionals have banded together under the name Who Wants To Be A Movie Star? to create a unique feature film 'GETTING HAL'.
The movie is the first to be financed entirely by money raised by auction. An internet invitation to wannabe actors who wanted to be in a film asked for sponsorship bids to secure a place on the cast, starting from 99 US cents. The higher the offer of sponsorship, the bigger the part in the movie, which director Tony Markes scripted around winning hopefuls.
Markes feels anyone can be a movie star given the chance, as long as the audience responds to them. Transvestites and businessmen are amoung the bidders that are cast, many of the first time actors written into the story as themselves.
His leading lady, Delicia Lanza, found herself cast thanks to her Italian parents, who offered 72 thousand US dollars towards the budget as a present for their daughter.
She plays an ice skater who inherits enough money to realise her dream - to buy an ice rink. But she meets a handsome con man Hal, played by established actor Brad Rowe, who seduces her with his charm then runs off with her fortune.
When she realises what has happened, the heiress hires a private detective (who runs a school for would-be fellow private investigators) to hunt her lover down - getting Hal.
The movie also features Bill Murray's brother, Bryan Doyle-Murray (Bedazzled, Stuart Little), who along with Rowe are the only two cast members who did not buy their way onto the set.
'Getting Hal' will get its first official screening at
