masters, has been credited with producing inspiring and innovative works now considered global treasures.\u003cbr/\u003eAn exhibition of 50 paintings from the works of Bellini, Georgione and Titian opens next weekend at the National Gallery of Art in Washington.\u003cbr/\u003eDuring the first 30 years of the 16th century, Bellini, Giorgione and Titian were all working side by side in Venice, drawing inspiration and a little friendly competition from each other.\u003cbr/\u003eThe works are presented thematically beginning with religious, sacred works that were often painted for cathedrals, convents and churches.\u003cbr/\u003eBut almost as often, rich patrons would ask for religious, symbolic works to be completed for private chapels and homes in Venice.\u003cbr/\u003eAlso during this time the artists turned to new subjects drawn from classical antiquity and developed new styles and techniques to represent these ideas.\u003cbr/\u003eAs co-curator, David Alan Brown of the National Gallery in Washington notes, these paintings often represent youth, passion and pleasure.\u003cbr/\u003eThe paintings also reflected a new sophistication found in the patrons with their new mercantile wealth.\u003cbr/\u003eSeveral of these paintings were once owned by one Italian merchant and hung together in his home.\u003cbr/\u003eOther Italian merchants began collecting and commissioning works by specific artists so that a new mode of owning paintings developed in Venice during this time.\u003cbr/\u003eAnd, these patrons wanted something other than paintings of a religious motif.\u003cbr/\u003eThemes of nymphs, shepherds and shady groves became the height of the Venetian mode of painting with the subject matter often representing idyllic places where a busy city dweller would plan to retreat.\u003cbr/\u003eThe paintings also reflected a combination of the pastoral settings with the Christ child and the Virgin Mary.\u003cbr/\u003eSylvia Ferino-Pagden, curator of Italian Renaissance Painting at the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Venice, noted that competition between artists brought on much of the innovation found in these works.\u003cbr/\u003eThese early 16th century masters revolutionized paintings by including nudes or partially clothed women in their paintings.  \u003cbr/\u003eMany of these paintings became important standards for 18th century Romantic painters and 19th century modernists such as Edouard Monet.\u003cbr/\u003eIronically, even after all the research and modern techniques, it is not known whether these images of women are idealised portraits of actual women or simply a representation of the artist's imagination.\u003cbr/\u003eThese artists also developed a new style of idealised portrait, in which both men and women were shown in the guise of a lover, poet, musician or soldier.\u003cbr/\u003eCalled \"action\" portraits, these works often were commissioned by the patron as a way of showing the dynamics of wealth and leisure activities.\u003cbr/\u003eThe exhibition opens this weekend and runs through mid-September at the National Gallery of Art in Washington, DC.\u003cbr/\u003e
