She is a member of the a member of the Senate Armed Services Committee. The Burke center receives money from the National Institutes of Health and offers free treatment to US veterans. \u003cbr/\u003e\"One of the other concerns that I have which is unbelievable that we haven't fixed yet,\" said Gillibrand on Monday. \"You don't actually transfer your active duty Department of Defense records directly to the VA. They have been unable to create a collaborative computer system that your files just get immediately transferred and are retained. I've heard from too many veterans that say 'my records were lost. I had to prove that my disability was combat-related and that should never happen. Our men and women should be given one hundred percent of the care they need, when they need it, based on their medical records and to not have a computer system that does that easily I think is absurd in this day and age.\" \u003cbr/\u003eAt the center, veterans from the Korean and Vietnam wars use interactive robots to improve muscle memory, by using their hands and toes to manipulate a controller to accomplish spatial tasks on a computer screen. \u003cbr/\u003e\"It's wonderful to see the technology is really bringing a quality of life back to these men and women, some of whom have served our country so bravely,\" said Gillibrand. \u003cbr/\u003eGillibrand also reacted to the Veterans Affairs Department announcement it would reorganize in order to make it easier for veterans to gain access to the sprawling department and its maze-like websites. \u003cbr/\u003eVA Secretary Robert McDonald called the restructuring the largest in the department's history and said it will bring a singular focus on customer service to an agency that serves 22 million veterans.\u003cbr/\u003e\"I'd like to see far more accountability,\" said Gillibrand. \"One of our biggest challenges that is still a problem is the wait times that men and women who desperately need treatment aren't getting it in a timely way and so we need more accountability. We need more support for the men and women who work at the VA so they can actually deliver the care that our veterans need and also one of my goals is to make sure our youngest veterans can begin to access the VA better. A lot of our youngest veterans don't know what services are available to them and what they are entitled to receive so sometimes they actually go without care.\"\u003cbr/\u003eThe VA has been under intense scrutiny since a whistleblower reported that dozens of veterans may have died while awaiting treatment at the Phoenix VA hospital, and that appointment records were manipulated to hide the delays. A report by the department's inspector general said workers falsified waitlists while their supervisors looked the other way or even directed it, resulting in chronic delays for veterans seeking care and bonuses for managers who appeared to meet on-time goals.\u003cbr/\u003eThe inspector general's office identified 40 patients who died while awaiting appointments in Phoenix, but said officials could not \"conclusively assert\" that the delays caused the deaths.\u003cbr/\u003eSome members of Congress have disputed the report and suggested that language casting doubt on the link between the delays and the patient deaths was inserted at the suggestion of top VA officials in Washington. The IG's office has denied that claim.\u003cbr/\u003eThe scandal led to the ouster of former VA Secretary Eric Shinseki and to a new law making it easier for veterans to get VA-paid care from local doctors.\u003cbr/\u003e1.
