Mid of a stuffed Winnie the Pooh toy on the bed \u003cbr/\u003eA charity group in India has launched a paediatric palliative care centre for children suffering from cancer.\u003cbr/\u003eThe New Delhi centre hopes to provide critical palliative care and support to patients from the moment of diagnosis through treatment and terminal care. \u003cbr/\u003eCancer has stolen 11-year-old Somesh Kumar's childhood. \u003cbr/\u003eHe's suffering from primitive neuroectodermal tumour - a cancer with a less than 8% 5 year survival rate after treatment. \u003cbr/\u003eNot only does he have to endure excruciating physical pain, but he also suffers the mental agony that comes with terminal cancer.\u003cbr/\u003eHis parents have brought him to New Delhi from the eastern Bihar state to this new palliative care unit opened by the charity group Cankids.\u003cbr/\u003eFor the first time perhaps, a doctor asks him - \"Forget about everything else, just tell me about your pain.\"\u003cbr/\u003eKumar says the pain feels like electricity passing through his legs.\u003cbr/\u003eHe will be admitted at the centre not just to address his pain, but also to be taken care of in a way traditional hospitals don't.\u003cbr/\u003ePalliative care, often referred to as the missing chapter in medical textbooks, is an approach that improves the quality of life of patients and their families facing the problems associated with life-threatening illnesses.\u003cbr/\u003eCankids founder Poonam Bagai says the centre is unique in the country:\u003cbr/\u003e\"Doctors are trained to treat and to cure. But what about the fact that people are in pain even at the moment of diagnosis and then as theÄÅ¼Ëdisease spreads actually, the level of palliative care goes up, till it reaches a point where there is no further cure and therefore the patient and the patient's family needs palliative care.\"\u003cbr/\u003eCankids says 70% to 80% of children diagnosed with cancer in India are dying and yet the awareness about palliative care is low and very few hospitals have dedicated palliative care units in the country.\u003cbr/\u003eAccording to Human Rights Watch, more than half of government-supported regional cancer centers still do not offer palliative care or pain management in India, even though more than 70 percent of their patients need it, resulting in unnecessary suffering for tens of thousands.\u003cbr/\u003eCankids is trying to fill this gap by providing full-time care and pain-management for children and counselling for both the children and their parents.\u003cbr/\u003eIt also helps adult patients in critical need of pain management.\u003cbr/\u003eMost children are brought by their parents to the Cankids centre after being diagnosed with cancer in its advanced stages.\u003cbr/\u003eAbha Singh joined Cankids as a patient support coordinator after her own son survived cancer. \u003cbr/\u003eShe says: \"We do not wish for a child to suffer at the time of his or her death. We bring them here and prepare them completely. If they wish to go home at the time, we even send them home. But the child should not be in pain. No mother can see her child suffering in pain.\"\u003cbr/\u003eIn advanced stages of cancer, dealing with pain becomes vital and the preferred drug for this is morphine, a derivative of opium.\u003cbr/\u003eAlthough India is the largest producer of opium in the world, Indian drug laws restrict morphine access to a limited number of hospitals and doctors, leaving thousands of patients especially in small towns, in severe pain.\u003cbr/\u003eIndia grows opium poppies, and produces opium for the international pharmaceutical market. \u003cbr/\u003eA complex system of drug regulation, put in place in the 1980s to combat illicit drug use , can lead to a jail sentence for misuse. \u003cbr/\u003eThere is also a fear that opium will cause addiction or breathing problems.\u003cbr/\u003ePaediatric palliative care physician Dr. Divya Pal Singh says: \"See, It's a paradox that although India produces the largest amount of raw opium, but as far as morphine use is concerned it's negligible as compared to other countries. He overcame a nerve sheath tumour. \u003cbr/\u003eHe says he battled cancer and the pain that came along with the help of morphine and has been taking the drug for effective pain relief since 2005:\u003cbr/\u003e\"Whatever pain killers you take, will have side effects. But the side effects are lower with Morphine. If you take some other medicine, and if you have 30% pain relief, with Morphine, you will get 70% benefit, which means it's 40% more beneficial than the other medicines.\"\u003cbr/\u003eActivists are demanding that the regulatory framework must be changed to allow marketing and distribution of morphine to hospitals across the states. \u003cbr/\u003eThe Supreme Court of India recently noted that while making morphine more accessible was a priority, the authorities had to ensure the drug was not misused.\u003cbr/\u003eBagai says everybody deserves a pain-free and happy life - and death - especially the terminally ill:\u003cbr/\u003e\"In our country, 70 to 80% children are dying of cancer still. So, we do need the palliative care right. I think the awareness is growing and that is our big push that we need to make sure that these palliative care units are provided. There is no money in palliative care, there is only support, there is only care. That is what pallium means, pallium means care, solace, support.\"\u003cbr/\u003eThe per capita consumption of morphine in India is one of the lowest in the world.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Indian health ministry is now preparing a palliative care strategy that will be part of the country's five year plan that started this year and runs until 2017.
