Old, young, black and white. All genders, all sexes. It's about equality,\" said Nance Frank, the exhibition curator and an expert on Sanchez's work.\u003cbr/\u003eSanchez's artwork documents everyday life in Key West at the beginning of the 20th century.\u003cbr/\u003eThe self-taught artist's family settled in Key West from Cuba in the 19th century, when a strong and united Cuban exile community favoured independence from Spain.\u003cbr/\u003e\"We had to cross this enormous 90-mile divide which is so much wider than it should be,\" said David Goode, one of the private collectors who contributed to the exhibition.\u003cbr/\u003e\"I hope this is one way that art can continue its historical tradition of bringing people together,\" he added. \u003cbr/\u003eCuba and the United States have an on-going political dispute that began with the Cuban revolution in 1959 and worsened when Washington imposed a commercial, economic, and financial embargo on the island for the past five decades.\u003cbr/\u003e\"Our institutions have come together to send a message (of unity) to the public of Key West and Havana,\" said the Director of Cuba's National Gallery of Art, Moraima Clavijo.\u003cbr/\u003eClavijo said Sanchez exhibited his work in Cuba in the 1950s, before Fidel Castro came to power.\u003cbr/\u003eExhibits by US artists or Cuban-American artists are rare. \u003cbr/\u003eIn 2009, several artists displayed their work in an exhibition entitled \"Chelsea visits Havana\".\u003cbr/\u003eOthers have shown their work at the Havana Biennial Art fair.\u003cbr/\u003eBut \"One Race\" is different, as it also includes the display of more than a dozen Cuban artists' work in Key West next February.\u003cbr/\u003eAmong those invited to the US are Cuban artists Manuel Mendive, Roberto Favelo, Rocio Garcia and Sandra Ramos.\u003cbr/\u003e\"I think roads need to open, and I think art is a phenomenon that can perfectly take care of that.
