developing countries are facing double burdens of communicable diseases and chronic non-communicable diseases, \"Chinese Health Minister Chen Zhu said at the opening ceremony of the Global Forum for Health Research. \u003cbr/\u003eGovernments need to redirect their health care research resources and have better cooperation on information exchange and investment, the officials said at the start of a four-day conference in Beijing hosted by the Geneva-based Global Forum for Health Research.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Global Forum is a global nonprofit body committed to drawing attention to inequality in the amount of money devoted to researching health problems of the developing world.\u003cbr/\u003eStephen Matlin, Executive Director of Global Forum for Health Research, said only a small fraction of the 125 (b)billion US dollars or more spent annually around the world on health-related research and development is devoted to problems faced by poor countries.\u003cbr/\u003eMatlin said there has been a massive growth in noncommunicable diseases like heart diseases, strokes, cancer, and mental and neurological diseases stemming from expanding city populations, and changes in lifestyles and living conditions caused by the movement from rural to urban areas.\u003cbr/\u003eAdditionally, he said, environmental factors such as pollution and climate change around the world have also affected health conditions.\u003cbr/\u003eMatlin stressed that more research was needed and more equitable health systems had to be put in place.\u003cbr/\u003e\"The inescapable conclusion for all these different trends in health that I have just been referring to, is that countries need to develop much more stronger and robust health systems to be able to deal with the health problems of populations that are arising,\" he said. \u003cbr/\u003eTo achieve that, developing countries need more support from the international community, said China's Health Minister Chen Zhu.\u003cbr/\u003eHe added more public health exchanges and cooperation were needed to improve the situation and that developed countries should provide technical assistance and funding for their less developed counterparts.\u003cbr/\u003eChina's health care programs have been watered down in the last two decades of breakneck economic reform in the country.\u003cbr/\u003eLeaders have recently earmarked (b) billions of yuan (dollars, euros) for rural health centres and expanding medical insurance programmes.\u003cbr/\u003eHowever, Chen said progress has been slow, especially in the country's west and
