One America's best known female painters, Cassatt was the only American ever invited to show her work in exhibitions...\u003c/span\u003e\n\u003cspan class='full-description hide'\u003eEnglish/Nat\u003cbr/\u003eThe major retrospective of paintings by Impressionist Mary Cassatt opens on Sunday in Washington D-C. \u003cbr/\u003eOne America's best known female painters, Cassatt was the only American ever invited to show her work in exhibitions organised by the French Impressionists towards the end of the last century.\u003cbr/\u003eHer art has grown in popularity in recent years, with one painting selling for more than four million (m) dollars in 1996.\u003cbr/\u003eMary Cassett was a modern woman in every sense of the word. \u003cbr/\u003eAn artist and feminist, she was only American to be held in high regard by the French Impressionists. \u003cbr/\u003eAlthough best known for her depictions of mothers and children, the exhibit opening on Sunday includes many other aspects of domestic life portrayed by Cassatt in the late 1800s.\u003cbr/\u003eThe 54 pieces on display at Washington's  National Gallery of Art include a wide variety of oil paintings as well as a selection of prints, based on Japanese woodblock designs.\u003cbr/\u003eIts the biggest retrospective of her work in more than 30 years.\u003cbr/\u003eSOUNDBITE: (English)\u003cbr/\u003e\"I think one of the virtues of the exhibition is its size, its very well chosen. Very choice. It, I think, shows the full range of Mary Cassatt's career - certainly its high point - and yet in a wonderfully condensed way.\"\u003cbr/\u003eSUPER CAPTION: Nicholai Cikovsky Junior, Senior Curator of American \u0026amp; British paintings at National Gallery of Art\u003cbr/\u003eA lesser known fact of was that she was a pioneer for the feminist movement in America.\u003cbr/\u003eBorn in Pittsburgh in 1844 to a well-traveled family, Mary Cassatt moved several times as a child to Philadelphia and to several European cities. \u003cbr/\u003eDespite the barriers of her sex, by her sixteenth birthday she was enrolled at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts.\u003cbr/\u003eHer initial training in the classics left her dissatisfied and she left America to settle in France in 1874.\u003cbr/\u003eWhile living in Paris she came in contact with the 'new painting' style of Impressionists Edouard Manet and Gustave Courbet.\u003cbr/\u003eBut it was Impressionist painter Edgar Degas who had the greatest impact on Cassatt. \u003cbr/\u003eThe two artists developed a lifelong friendship born of mutual professional respect.  \u003cbr/\u003eAs her mentor, Degas encouraged Cassatt's artistic experimentation and invited her into the circle of independent artists in Paris.  \u003cbr/\u003eHe once said of her \"She has infinite talent\".  \u003cbr/\u003eBoth Degas and Cassatt were more concerned with the depiction of the figure rather than the landscape as favoured by many of their colleagues.\u003cbr/\u003eTypical is her \"Portrait of a Little Girl\", painted in 1878. \u003cbr/\u003eSOUNDBITE: (English)\u003cbr/\u003e\"A wonderful painting capturing that that age, the child sprawling in the armchair. The whole construction of the picture, the figure to one side is very much like Degas. It's a very commanding picture.\" \u003cbr/\u003eSUPER CAPTION: Nicholai Cikovsky Junior, Senior Curator of American \u0026amp; British paintings at National Gallery of Art\u003cbr/\u003eWhile Degas focused on the performers, Cassatt's works often depict the audiences.\u003cbr/\u003eIn an era when the house lights were never completely dimmed during a performance, the fashionably dressed became a part of the show.\u003cbr/\u003eHer paintings often reflected the times she lived in.\u003cbr/\u003eMany of Cassatt's models were women at home, and her depiction of them was realistic.\u003cbr/\u003eIn many cases Cassatt used members of her family as models, including her sister Lydia, who came to live with her in Paris in 1875.\u003cbr/\u003eThe later pictures of Lydia show her frail.  She died from a kidney disease in 1880.\u003cbr/\u003eLike many of her contemporaries, Cassatt owed inspiration to the popular style Japanese wood blocking. \u003cbr/\u003eIn 1891 she completed a series of ten images of women's everyday life. \u003cbr/\u003eCritics say the complexity of the printing technique and originality of composition are unlike any created to this point.  \u003cbr/\u003eBut to most audiences Cassatt is best known for her remarkable sensitivity in mother - child pictures.\u003cbr/\u003eSOUNDBITE: (English)\u003cbr/\u003e\"She certainly made that subject her own.  They are also some of the most beautiful and most original paintings in the way they are done.  She had a great, I think, a great inherent feel for line, for contour, for pattern and one sees that - especially in those paintings.
