Monday, killing at least 28 people in one of the deadliest bombings since the fall of the Taliban, officials said.\u003cbr/\u003eAP Television News footage on Tuesday showed vehicles damaged by the explosion with Afghan troops patrolling the area.\u003cbr/\u003eA shopkeeper said children selling chewing gum and cigarettes were among the 60 people wounded in the blast, apparently aimed at a police commander.\u003cbr/\u003eNATO's International Security Assistance Force said the attacker was driving a motorised rickshaw, a small engine-powered cart commonly used as a taxi in southern Afghanistan.\u003cbr/\u003eThe bomb detonated near a taxi stand around 6:30p.m. local time (1400GMT) just before evening prayers, in the town of Gereshk in Helmand province, the world's largest poppy-growing region and site of the country's worst violence this year.\u003cbr/\u003eGereshk district chief said about 28 people were killed, saying 13 police and about 15 civilians had died.\u003cbr/\u003eThe provincial chief of public health said the hospital recorded 26 deaths and about 60 injuries, though he said the death toll was likely higher.\u003cbr/\u003eNATO said 13 people were taken to a NATO-Afghan base for treatment and 45 people to the Gereshk hospital.\u003cbr/\u003eTaliban militants have set off a record number of suicide bombings this year, more than 100 through the end of August, but few have been as deadly as Monday's blast. \u003cbr/\u003eThe Taliban typically aim their attacks at international and Afghan military and police forces.\u003cbr/\u003eA Defence Ministry spokesman said a local police commander who survived the attack appeared to have been the target. \u003cbr/\u003eA Taliban spokesman could not immediately be reached for comment.\u003cbr/\u003eThe attack appeared to be the second deadliest bombing in Afghanistan this year and the third deadliest since the fall of the Taliban in 2001. \u003cbr/\u003eIn June, 35 people were killed in a bomb attack on a police bus in Kabul, while in September 2002, 30 people were killed and 167 wounded in a Kabul car bombing.\u003cbr/\u003eThere has been a sharp rise in violence in Afghanistan this year, especially in the south. \u003cbr/\u003eMore than 4,200 people, mostly militants, have died in insurgency-related violence in 2007, according to an AP count based on figures from Afghan and Western officials.\u003cbr/\u003eEarlier in the day, a spokesman for the militant group said the Taliban would consider negotiating with the Afghan government, but said that no direct
